So Called Job Placement Agencies
by bestyear | Feb 27 '04
If you have a job thank your lucky stars and pray that you do not get laid-off like I did! Job placement agencies are a joke!

I bet the situation is even worse now. I'm planning on quitting my job so I can move to go to grad school, but it's scary.

Good to hear you got something. I just found myself out of work recently (should have been Monday but it turned out to be last Saturday) so I am in the same sort of boat. I spent a good long time trying to find a job before my last one too but am a bit more hopeful about this round.

UPDATE GOOD NEWS !!!! (Reply to this comment)

GOOD NEWS !
A local "Temp Staffing Agency" that I went to and registered with months ago has found me employment
in a "Temp" position outside of the many fields that I would prefer to be in!

I have now finished my second eight hour day working there.

This time next week I will have some money to put into the bank for the first time in nineteen months!

It is not a "full-time" job like I want, but it's money and when you got bills to pay money is what
pays them!

Whew! Whoo!

monster.com and monstertrak.com were the first two job seeking sites I signed with.
Every so often I will get an email message from some company that read my monster resume. But when I contact them they do not have anything.
So far to date I have gotten nothing from them.

I have signed-up with dozens of Job Agencies on-line and over the phone
including a bunch of newspaper's job/resume posting sites.
So I have not gotten anything from them.

and hope you find something soon.

My husband was out of work about 2 years ago, he posted is resume on a couple on line sites I think one of them had the word monster in it. He got quite a few hits and interviews that way. You may want to give that option a try.

Too Few Are Doing Too Much! (Reply to this comment)

I was told that productivity is so high now, "higher than it has ever been in the history of man!"

That is why there are no jobs anywhere, and why all you ever hear about is more and more layoffs.

We have less people doing more work!

Also we got better machines now than ever before. These machines are doing tasks that used to employ dozens of people!
These machines don't need health-care and don't get paid overtime!

Hang in there and maybe some day you can get a job running one of those over-productive machines!

Seriously Hang in there!

I lost my job in 1998 (layoff due to slow business), twice in 1999 (once was a layoff due to slow business and once was when my company relocated), then again in 2001 when the automotive parts manufacturer I worked for lost a lot of business and had to lay off over 1/3 of its salaried employees. The company I work for now isn't doing that well, and has had 3 salaried employee layoffs in the two and a half years I've been there. So far I've managed to avoid a layoff there - but only because NO ONE can do my job - and there's no one to do it anyway, because they've laid off so many employees!

I agree that employment agencies are a joke. I have secured interviews through them, but they are few and far between. They like to SAY they have jobs, just so they can get lots of applicants to fatten up their bank of people they can send out to those few interviews. I've gone off on my share of people in these agencies - a lot of whom are displaced "would you like fries with that?" workers themselves. How many times did I have to remind them that I existed? How many times did they not return my calls? How many times did they have my info wrong? LOTS!

I wish you good luck - I feel your pain. It sucks out there - and then the president is allowing (and offering incentives to) companies who are sending our jobs overseas. We have him to thank for a big part of the unemployment problem!

I don't know about "resting easy" even with a job. My area was very hard hit with the textile mills closing--biggest lay off in the history of the state. Many of our locals don't have high school diplomas--didn't need them at the mill. But, those jobs moved overseas.

I found that being pretty agressive helped in finding a permanent job. I targeted companies that I wanted to work for and went to see the people who could hire me if a job came up. I had resumes tailered to each job or company, writing samples, and I expressed an interest in part-time or temporary work.

For a while, I juggled three different part-time jobs--just waiting and hoping that something would work into full-time with benefits. It took 2 years before an opening came up with one of the part-time slots. That was a relief when it finally happened.

Try to get your foot in the door. When something does open up, then you're there and they know you and your work.

It also helps to get the word out with relatives and friends. They can open doors that the professionals don't know about or don't really care about.

Best of luck! I do know where you're at and how hard it is looking and waiting. I found it easier when I had some control and went out sold myself as a great potential employee. It could still get discouraging, but I knew that any day I might talk to the right person at the right time and get a job. It took a long time, but it finally paid off.

Hang in there!

Job Placement (Reply to this comment)
by skbreese
I know there's lots more competition in Atlanta, but my husband quit his job in December and was working by the first of February. He bypassed the agencies and used the newspaper and prospecting on his own. He only has a high school diploma and is now working at Pep Boys as a Service Writer. You will probably be better off just updating your resume and dropping it off at employers that may be able to use your skills. Also, don't be afraid to work through a reputable temporary agency, which my husband also did. They sometimes turn into permanent jobs. Good luck. Sheila

Best of luck to you in finding a job! I can relate to being laid off from work. I worked for Bank of America for 10 years when my department moved to another state. It was very upsetting at the time. That was in Oct 2002.

We decided that we would try and see if we could make it without my income until our youngest goes to kindergarten. It's a struggle at times, but so far so good!

I hope things will get better and you will find a job soon!

Wendy :-)
