Discount muffler shops seem economical, but thin pipes will eventually cost you.

I've never had an exhaust system done at one of the big chain shops but I've heard the horror stories about the expensive pipes and labor. And I agree that cheap exhaust parts are not worth the cost savings... I once bought a cheap muffler for a car and put it on myself. Unbelievably, it lasted just a year before it rusted out.

It's my experience that stainless steel exhaust systems last for the life of the car. I have made a steel exhaust system last much longer than normal by cleaning and painting it (with heat-rated paint) before I installed it. After years, it still looked new! Hard to believe that $5 in paint could make such a difference.

Anyway, good info. A nice addition to your essay would the cost of doing it yourself versus going to a chain shop or a competent mechanic. Exhaust repair is among the easier work that a backyard mechanic can do.
