Hi Sleeper.... (Reply to this comment)

I enjoyed reading your perspective!
Hokey as it may sound, we all want those we trust to reciprocate that trust(blame it on Human Nature).
We could easily drive ourselves mad chasing that
Elusive trust, but the funny thing is we never
Really know who it is on the other end of that
computer screen do we? It's an illusion Baby!

We do here as well, Tom. Of course, in our case, they are faking things and claiming to be a major league team. In our case, they are known as the Texas Rangers.
And now, Mr. Hicks, the owner, says he wants to quit his day job and be more involved with the team.
Doom is upon us.

hey there Kevin...
Hmmm. I like that analogy: major league and 'Triple A'
Here in Iowa we only have Triple A baseball.
I am a big fan of all things 'Triple A'.

hey there '...x'...
I think you already have a better 'handle' on this WoT thing than perhaps you think.
I went two years hidden. It simply allows you to make your decisions in private. I did get a few added trusters after 'de-cloaking' and one or two who dropped me afterward. It will always be political and there will always be mistakes you make and 'mistakes' others see you making but that are correct for you.
Such is the life here on Epinions.
Thanks for your read/rate/comment.

Your Words of Wisdom... (Reply to this comment)
by xis_
...were pretty interesting -- and as someone who is new here, insightful. But, I really wanted more.
The WOT is fairly mystical to me as a newbie and (basically) outsider. It has this feeling of being REALLY IMPORTANT. It also seems VERY POLITICAL.
I'm not sure if I would be comfortable hiding my WOT as a new person because it seems weird -- I mean, its about trust, and there's something off-kilter-feeling about hiding something that's all about trust in the first place. (Does this make sense? I'm having a hard time putting the feeling into words as it is quite subtle.)
However, I do often have the feeling that if I trust so-and-so I'm somehow going to snub someone else (oblivious as I am to it all) because there's this complex, interacting, constantly-changing relationship undercurrent in epinions. Its slightly nerve-wracking! Like going to a foreign country and knowing you're making unintentional faux pas -- and that you have no idea how to stop it.
Not that I care all that much, honestly, because at this early stage for me I generally trust the people who've given good reviews, yes, but, ALSO those who've given me some personal guidance. And, besides, I've just never been good at social graces! ;)
Thanks for making me think about the WOT some more.

Re: How to improve this essay (Reply to this comment)

Hey there Michele...
No problem! I enjoy the fact you took the time to cast a critical (in a good sense of the word!) eye upon my thoughts. That means more to me than another read-n-rate without a comment.
But I believe I do represent 'everyuser' here at Epinions!
I think I did present a bit (perhaps too much!) of the background of why I 'hid' my WoT and the reasons I (or any user might have) had for doing so. A bit about the 'work' I thought I would need to do to overcome that 'self-imposed' handicap. The reason and mechanism I chose to 'come out of the closet'. And the recommendations I would give any other user who might consider 'hiding' their own WoT.
I'll probably simply leave it as it is.
Thanks for the read/rate/comment!

How to improve this essay (Reply to this comment)
by msmarques
Sorry for the low rate, but I think this piece is only of interest to people on your WOT (or interested in your WOT).
I looked to see what sort of articles others were writing in this section and saw a fair number of people seem to be writing advice on the WOT, which I think is of more general relevance.
You offer a little advice, but it seems pretty light, and not well separated from the personal WOT story.
If you want to tell your personal WOT story, I think there are two ways to go that would be very helpful:
(1) After the intro paragraph, start each paragraph with general WOT advice, then go on to how you applied this, and end the paragraph with what the results were for you. At the end have a summary, where you list your advice (but all coming from the above parts of your essay). This would be helpful, because it would make it more clear to the reader how to learn from your personal experience.
(2) Have completely separate sections, perhaps with headings on "My personal WOT story" and "General Advice" ... or at least give a heading to the "General Advice" section. And pull all your advice into the general advice section. This would be helpful to those who want to focus on the advice.
If you do choose to rewrite, send me an e-mail and I'll re-rate.

Hey there Deena...
I know I tend to read 'deep into' the reviews when I am researching a
purchase. I am sure I can't be the only one.
Of course, the key is to write reviews of stuff that does not already
have 500-plus reviews. Lot easier to be found on the lightly-reviewed
stuff.

Naive again here! (Reply to this comment)
by deenaf
Once again when it comes to this site I am clueless, even after a couple of years! I never really gave the WoT much thought and was always simply satisfied with my paltry 19 or 20.... see I don't even know how many I have! I didn't really understand it from the getgo.... I mean, if people are really researching something online, they'd probably get to my reviews at SOME point! LOL!!

Have been in fairly frequent scuffles with one of those senders ever since too... and he's mad as hell that I won't add him. heh.
I get a strange kick out of that..

I've never gotten one of those "if you trust them I don't trust you" e-mails, either, Tom. Or a hidden NH - people seem perfectly happy to claim their NHs when they give them :)
Clearly, we need to try harder ;)
Glad you're out of the closet, it must have been getting stuffy in there after three years......
