Intense.
Inspiring.
Moving.
Heartbreaking.
Life-changing.
Wow!
These are all words that came to me as I read If I Am Missing Or Dead: A Sisters Story of Love, Murder, and Liberation. When I began the book, I was thrown a little by the lack of quotations to set off dialogue, but I realized very quickly that the method used pulled me deeper into the story. It was as if I were there rather than on the outside looking in.
Author Janine Latus skillfully weaves her own life story with that of her sisters, both growing up dealing with tough situations that led them into abusive relationships, not valuing themselves but rather placing their value on the love shown (or not) by their significant others.
Its clear from the start that Latus sister is murdered; the title itself gives that much away. But the details, the heartbreaking story of both sisters, is where we feel the pain, and where we learn. Its also clear as you read that it had to be hard for Latus to return to all the painful memories to share, but her courage to speak out when so few can is admirable, and she does it with such talent, you cant help but want to know more about where she is in life now.
I wrote Latus to thank her for speaking out with this beautiful book, and I encourage you to reach out to someone you know who takes that step of courage too. When we can speak out like this, lives can change
and be saved.
