I have now owned 4 Memorex CD-Rom drives of various speeds. We have 3 desktop computers which I built and currently have these drives in them. The only reason I haven't replaced them at this time is that I can't afford to replace them and at least they are getting me by.

Since we started using them we have had to replace my wife's, which went dead with-in 6 months. I thought it was just a bad drive so I went ahead and replaced it with the same brand, but faster speed.

I am wishing now that I would have got her a different one because the other ones we are using are very sluggish. They take forever to read a CD, that is if we can get them to read the CD at all which is a real problem. For some unknown reason almost every CD we use the CD-Rom drive just sits there and winds out until it finally reads the CD.

Half the time they don't read the CD. We have to take the CD out and reposition it in the drive over and over again. If there is even the slightest bit of dirt or a fingerprint on the disk it usually will not read it and we have to wash the CD.

I have tried re-installing the drivers that came with the CD-Rom many times and it did not help at all. I looked for updated drivers at the Memorex site and there are none. In fact their support web page sucks and does not have much support at all. It was a total waste of time.

At one point I thought there might be something wrong with my computer because of the poor performance. However, due to the fact that this has been the case with all 3 of our computers I quickly ruled that out.

When playing on line games like Diablo II LOD I have found that in the middle of game play the drive will stop working. It will just sit there and then all of a sudden kick in once again. Needless to say this is NOT good for game playing.

The documentation that comes with the drive is OK, but does not address the problems with these drives. There is NO trouble shooting section at all.

I have since done more research on this drive and have found that numerous people have replaced these drives with a different brand as they experienced the same results.

I will NEVER consider buying another Memorex CD-Rom of any speed!!! As soon as I can afford to replace the ones I have they will be out of here and in the garbage where, in my opinion, they belong. The reason I wrote this opinion is to forewarn all of you out there to steer clear of these drives or you will be sorry.
