And possibly your review contains just a tad too much painful truth. Enjoy your stay in the States. I'm a few states away, but all things considered, I'll be a neighbor. My email is always on my profile page. Feel free, in a pinch.

Comprehensive list of necessities. A political encyclopedia surpasses a passport anyday. I could use one of those due to my ever-present state of "not getting it"!

I had thought I put an end to the "it" jokes when I was 12. I'll be monitoring myself today, so as not to submit to the stereotype.

Thanks for the humor ;)

I don't think "regular English phrases" is really the term you were looking for there, Jozef! ;)

I already told you that I'd introduce you to my former English teacher from Alabama. Don't worry, we'll teach you how to properly say "y'all" and the other regular English phrases ;)

I don't think I can possibly like wrestling - it's so.......stupid! Yeah. American Football could be interesting - they'll love it when I punt that tiny little football about 60 yards (I hope I do anyway - that big Aussie Rules ball can go about 40 from my boot).

I should just wear a sign saying "apathetic Australian - religions need not apply" That could work.... Cheers!

I might have to take that one into account - though we shall see how the first few days go before I take any action. I hope it's not necessary, though I fear the worst!

Just so long as they don't go asking me to say any other Australianisms, it'll be alright!

I've heard that selective deafness can come in handy - I believe that's a skill I'll have to learn and practise just for such occasions! Thanks for reminding me :p

because America needs more white southerners (Reply to this comment)

You are going to Georgia, so you will need, in addition, introductory guides to fandom of

1) NASCAR auto racing, about which sport you should never inquire into fuel costs or efficiency.

2) Professional wrestling, about whose stars you should never say "Well, HE should never be the governor of a major state".

3) American football, which is nowhere near as amusing as Australian Rules Football, and where the Expatriates almost always lose the Super Bowl to the Patriots, so get your humility practice now.

Also, I have a journalist friend who's a native Iranian, and he assures me that Southern Christianity is far more intense than Iranian Islam. So you might consider converting to Islam instead, to save energy.

best wishes,
- Brian

As a fellow immigrant... (Reply to this comment)

... with an accent (Scottish, now dulled to an odd, semi-Canadian burr by a decade and a half in the U.S.), I have to whole-heartedly agree with the cattle-prod idea. Stun guns are smaller, and more easily concealed, though. Although, perhaps your fellow university students will evince more maturity than the 13-year olds I had to cast my lot with when I came here, so the electroshock therapy may not be necessary.

Cheers!

I've already experienced that - as well as the horrifying confusion of reading through the sports pages, baffling in extremis! The net is a very handy thing to have.

Whether I hit QV Market is another thing altogether, I'm not a big fan of it. The Tim Tams might have to do! Cheers,

That is pretty much what I plan to do, unless my wanderings take me to Haiti, or some inner city place where I've heard things are a little less than safe. Those damn vests are much too bulky anyway!

Oh, and I suppose I should say "G'day" to strangers too, just to have them wondering that little bit more! Thanks for the comment,

Remember the old adage: Go to America, open a newspaper and watch your own country disappear.

In 1997 the New York Times had more stories about Bananas than Australia. Eeek.

I found the best way to help someone cope with this terrifying coss-oceanic transplant was to hit the Queen Vic markets and fill a Weet Bix box with all the tacky Australiana crap I could find, stopping short of stuffed cane toads as that may cause quarantine issues.

you said...
"I keep hearing about how violent it is in the USA and how much guns are a part of daily life. So I think I'll go Mr Pimp Daddy-style and grab myself one of these bad boys at some point, just in case someone randomly decides to carjack me or otherwise commit a random act of violence upon my person."

Despite the nightmares and delusions of Mr. Moore and his ilk, I doubt that many of your fellow Eps members have heard gunfire in the streets they frequent or been 'carjacked' or any other vicious act of crime or hooliganism in their day-to-day life here in the States.

I might suggest instead you maintain the same sense of care and discretion that you might in any metropolitan area around the world.

And don't forget to smile at strangers. It will drive them nuts . . ..
