Seeing Through the Smoke- A Poem About the Holocaust

The Bottom Line We're doing a project on the Holocaust for English class.. my life is changed forever.

Every day is like endless night,
a choking blanket of dull black
we sit in piercing silence
numb from our biting hunger
and abandoned by God

Every day is the the one before
where seconds are minutes
and hours are years
and we no longer have a voice
we were robbed of our souls

Every day is a bigger weight
crushing all of our hopes of freedom
and rubbing our paper flesh raw
we hope to go to sleep and wake from this hell
yet we live for the disappointment of reality
stale bread crumbs and broken fingers

Every day is a new battle to be lost
where you're stranded in a sea of limp skeletons
and the ashes of your own kin
we inhale the bitter air with all intention to give up
lulled to sleep by the echoes of screams
and the hyena laugh of the barbed wire fence that taunts us

Every day is a wicked fairy tale
a withered existance like a rose beneath the sand
jagged thorns twisted in fleshless limbs by tongues we don't dare understand

Every day is spent all alone
lying next to a breathless mother
who rots by the hands of ignorance and wreckless brutality

Every day is a gamble
where the wrong turn gets you riddled with metal
or a van full of toxic mistrust to be inhaled.

Every day is a night.

**11 Million people died of the brutal atrocities brought upon the world by Adolf Hitler and his pathetic Nazi clones. This was 2/3's of the Jews living in post World War 1 Europe, or aproximately 6 million innocent people. The other victims of the Holocaust included: the mentally ill and disabled, Gypsies, Jehovah Witnesses, P.O.W's, Slavs, homosexuals and political enemies. The knowledge of the crimes of the men of Hitler will forever be burned into my mind as cruel, unexcusable and down right stupid.. thank you for taking your time to read my review.
