CARE PACKAGES For The College Kids - Great For Morale

The Bottom Line I think care packages are important and, of course, always fun to receive!

College is a great time in a person's life. So much personal growth goes on and so many things are learned. Like, how to chug the most from a beer bong! Just kidding! But seriously, college is fun and exciting! But college can make some people homesick and in some cases cause a lot of stress.

I've done 2 years and a quarter of college and I'm fixin to go back. I never got homesick, and I don't often stress, but packages are always fun to get and I hope I get a lot when I go back!

Even if you can't wait to get away from your parents, you'll still miss home a little. I think care packages are really important for freshmen (especially if out of state) and those prone to homesickness.

I'm not really picky but here are some things that I liked getting in my packages:

* Candy - Gummi Bears, Sour Patch Kids, Almond Joy, Godiva Mint Chocolate, M&Ms, etc.

* Food - granola bars, trail mix, cookies, etc.

* Money - It's all about the Benjamin's baby! Any amount is helpful for a broke college student.

* Entertainment - CDs, magazines, books, DVDs, posters, gift certificates, etc.

* Technology - portable USB drive, digital camera, web cam, video games, zip disk

* Sizzurp (a little liquor is always nice! 21+!)

* Newspaper Clippings - I like to keep up on local news & comic strips are always fun.

* Homemade Calendar - pictures of friends, family & pets with birthdays marked, vacations planned, etc.

* Pictures - family, friends & pets

* Letters & Cards - I've always prefered hand written notes or letters to cards and typed letters, it feels like the person cares more and took more time thinking about you.

Recommendation: If you send edible stuff (especially candy) send enough to be shared with roommates and friends, it's instant cool points in the dorms!

Of course, care packages don't have to be expensive or elaborate. Even if it's just a letter, a candy bar, and a picture you'll bring some comfort and happiness to your college student. It was nice, but kind of embarrasing at the same time, when my grandma sent me a quilt that she made. It's my favorite blanket and I still have it, but I always caught flak for it afterwards. I'm just glad it wasn't a knitted sweater. But in the end the sentiment outweighed the jest. Be thoughtful.

Phone Card?

If you can't just call them up and they don't have a cell phone send them a calling card. Or better yet, send them a cool cell phone!

For The Ever Present Lazy People...

If you supposedly "don't have the time" or "don't know what to send," just buy a pre-made care package. It won't be special or unique, but it'll be stuff for your college student.

Best Times To Mail Packages:
* Shortly After Student Arrives At School
* Before Finals
* After Winning Scholarships or Awards
* After Acing Finals or Making Honor Roll (Dean's List)
* Before A Big Game (for athletes)

NOTE: Care packages are great for soldiers in training (Basic/AIT), overseas, or far from home!

During Basic Training I received a couple of care packages and it was great! Mail becomes so important in that type of situation it's crazy, and probably more so for overseas soldiers. I always got at least one letter a day during mail call, but some people get none. It's nice to share the love, see if you can write one of your soldier's friends too.

Final Comments:

For me, I liked things that were fun, funny, or lighthearted. The best stuff was the thoughtful stuff - a nice letter, a good picture, grandma's quilt... I always liked getting stuff around test time to lighten the mood and help me relax. You know your loved one, put some thought into the gifts - it'll show and be much appreciated.

There's so much you can do with a care package it's crazy. Just use your imagination and have fun! Always personalize the package for the person that's receiving it!

Spread The Love!
