The Father Knows Best Mentality in the United State Of Ignorant America

The Bottom Line What more do I need to say?

Note from author: This subject of gay marriages in America is really very angering to me so I feel a need to address it. I don’t promise this essay won’t come from a place of emotion, so please bear with me or stop reading now if you think you might be offended.

It’s the year 2004. We’ve sent men to the moon, invented the A-Bomb, have internet and computers for garden lovers and pedophiles alike, there are plasma televisions the size of football fields in people’s homes, drive SUV’s the size of tankers, and “Girls Gone Wild” is now down to $9.99 for two videos displaying the hottest college women you would never take home to mom. In this age of decadence and decay, I find it bordering on a place of stupidity and ignorance that people’s little feathers get ruffled over the idea of gay marriage. In the famous last words of John Stossel, “Give me a break.” For those of you who agree with me, see the following arguments to counter the stupidity of those ignorant souls who feel a need to brainwash others with their religious/biased arguments while that same night surfing for lesbian porn with their hands shoved down their pants.

“IT’S NOT NORMAL!”
Well, neither are breast implants, eighty-thousand square foot houses, the homeless person you just ignored, or the two brain cells you have left over from years of drug use in the 70’s which you are now attempting to utilize in your argument against gay marriage. Do you have a point other than the one that has mysteriously appeared on your head?

“IT’S AGAINST GOD!”
So is molesting little boys and we see not much has been done about that in what is supposed to be one of the most pious religions in the world. Oh and since we are on what is supposedly against God, then perhaps you may want to reevaluate your judgment on others because I do believe that there is a nice little clause in the Bible you claim to believe in about “judge ye not, lest ye be judged.” Hmm, since you seem to have a direct link to the Divine’s most innermost thoughts and feelings, you might want to ask him about your status on the heaven and hell list. What was that saying about those who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones? Before you launch your argument about what is “against God,” I imagine you might want to take a look in your own backyard.

“GOD DESTROYED SODOM AND GOMORRAH BECAUSE OF GAYS!”
He did? You were there? Wow! I never knew. I thought it was simply because of the hospitality clause from that time period. You know the one where you were supposed to be hospitable to guests and yet the guests were behaving in a rather unruly fashion so God allegedly destroyed them. Is this the same God that also made rules about how you were supposed to treat slaves? Oh and this is also the same God who basically made a Vegas bet with Satan that Job would never denounce Him. Boy, I sure am glad that’s your God and not mine!

“HOMOSEXUALITY IS DISGUSTING AND SICK!”
Really? You didn’t seem to think that when you talked about how hot it was that Madonna and Britney Spears were lip-locked at the MTV awards. Picking your nose in public is disgusting, wiping back to front is disgusting, coughing with your mouth open is disgusting…all these things are disgusting yet bearable. You want to know what I think is disgusting? The fact that some people are starving in this country while top 1% makes most of the money; that Pell Grants are being cut for more than 87,000 students who are trying to better themselves in a county where a person is judged by how much they make, not how good of a person they are; that top executives are scraping by with barely a tap on the hand in comparison to the lives they destroyed by their actions; that there are millions of people in this country who can’t afford health insurance, many of whom are children…this and so much more. Even worse is the fact that people like you who profess to be religious and spiritual and yet instead of protesting against those disgusting situations, you stand here disgusting me with your narrow-minded argument that homosexuality is sick because of your socialization and your conscious decision to take up valuable breathing space with your ignorance…as if there aren’t enough people in the world like that already.

The above are just a few of the ridiculous, narrow-minded arguments I have heard in relation to the subject of gay marriages in the United States. It truly amazes me that this country has come so far on a technological and an industrial level, yet we are still so unbearably and unbelievably ignorant. This country was founded on the principals of logic and the importance of keeping church and state separate but the contradictions of our government are amazing. We say “one nation under God” yet our country is capitalistic in nature. However, if one would distinctly remember, in the Bible it talks of how Jesus was displeased with the money-changers, that usury was against God (unless you were Jewish, then it was okay) and yet this same country wants to delve into the issue of homosexuality. We want to make it illegal for gay people to get married?! How archaic is that? Since when does the government have the right to dictate who a person can love and marry? Are we as a country going to stand back and let yet another facet of American lives be dictated by the laws of this country? We are already giving up our freedoms little by little to the government, complacent in our “father knows best” mentality which we have been socialized to believe in.

…and we call this freedom? Shame, shame…we have not come very far from the days when it was just perfectly natural to burn witches at the stake or when the non-Aryans were herded into concentration camps, while the Japanese were in internment camps in our own country…and we called them archaic as we shook our heads in disbelief at their actions. I can only imagine what the people in the future will say when they look back at our ways. Perhaps they will call us base with only a fine veneer of civility to justify our ignorance.

Thank you for reading.

Post script (this comment was written in reply to a member and I felt it was worthwhile to place it in the text of this commentary): One doesn't have to agree with the idea of same sex marriages on a personal level, but if we allow such a thing to take place in this country, whose to say who will be targeted next? There is a story I read somewhere once about a man who did nothing as he watched his neighbors being herded away during the WW2 by the Nazis. He kept telling himself that it had nothing to do with him. He never spoke up even as the atrocities continued. When they finally came for him, he realized in all of his not speaking up, there was no one left to speak for him. I think this illustrates the magnitude of our present condition of this country. If we allow an amendment made to invalidate the love between those in a same sex relationship, whose to say when our day will be next?
