I have a kid who loses and breaks his glasses on a routine basis. After buying several pairs over the years from conventional eyeglass dealers, I decided to get him a spare pair before the next loss or accident. I looked around the internet and found that Zenni Optical had very good prices on glasses that looked very similar to the ones my son wears. I decided to give them a shot.
I am glad I did. They have good glasses, good prices, and good service.
What the Site sells
Prescription eyeglasses starting at $8.00 complete. They sell all kinds of frames and lenses from the most simple to the most complex.
My Experience
Zenni Optical is quite easy to navigate. Down the left side are categories of eyeglasses and clicking on one of the links brings up photos of the frames along with full descriptions of the glasses. If you are interested in a pair of glasses, just click and add any extras like anti reflective coating ($4.95) and tint ($4.95). You must have your prescription in front of you because you will need several pieces of information from it.
Extra strength and bifocals are more expensive than single regular vision prescriptions.
One feature I like is that the site lets you know if something looks out of whack that you input. I made an error and put in the wrong "PD-Pupillary Distance" for my son and I was alerted that the figure I put in was outside of normal parameters. Indeed, I had made a big mistake that would have resulted in Chris not being able to wear the glasses.
Once you have entered your prescription info and chosen any extras, you go right to the checkout. Shipping is a straight $4.95 per order and all glasses are shipped with a hard case and lens cleaning cloth.
Checking out is very simple. Just fill out your address and phone number as well as email address and pay by any major credit card. I used my MasterCard and everything went through immediately. There was no upselling and no erroneous charges.
I received a confirmation email and then a shipping one with a UPS tracking number a couple of days later. My son's glasses arrived in about five days after the shipping notice came via UPS, packed well, and inside the free hard case. The glasses were fine. The ones we chose were simple and inexpensive because they are spares and because I had no idea what I was getting into when I ordered but the quality is pretty darn good. I will most definitely order a better pair for Chris and both my husband and I want to get a pair of glasses there as well. I wear contacts (when I wear anything for vision correction) but need reading glasses for close work. I could buy the dollar store ones but I have a prescription and would prefer to buy from Zenni Optical. I can get them for eight bucks!
I have to say, I am very pleasantly surprised with this site and the ease of ordering as well as selection and price.
Shipping and Returns
Shipping is $4.95 per order no matter how many pairs of glasses you buy. All come with hard shell cases and lens cloths.
Because every pair of glasses is made to order, you cannot return them for a full refund BUT, if you don't like them for any reason, you can return them for 50% of the cost within four weeks after ordering. Obviously,if the company makes any sort of error, they will correct it. I suggest you carefully read all descriptions and study the lenses before committing. The lenses are exactly as pictured and described, at least for the pair I bought.
Conclusion
I am very impressed with everything about Zenni Optical. The prices are very good, even for high-end glasses, and shipping is low. You can get your glasses in a week or 10 days (depending on complexity of the prescription) and the quality even for the cheapie frames is as good as what sits on the racks at optical stores. My son says his glasses fit fine and he sees perfectly through them and has asked to wear the new ones instead of the ones I paid three or four times the amount for.
The only con and this is a con with any online store is that you can't physically try the glasses on. They do have a guide to help you choose the right types of frames for your face and prescription which is helpful and most people have an idea of what they are looking for.
5 stars! Savings, quality, and service. I couldn't ask for more.
