The Bottom Line Here it is. Another album list, like you haven't seen any of these before. This one is to celebrate my first anniversary on Epinions.

I am posting this compendium of my personal favorite metal albums on the date of my Epinions first anniversary. These are not the albums I probably would have chosen five years ago but then again I wasn't that much into metal then. It's not that my tastes have changed that much, it's just that I have discovered a style of music that I favor and didn't even know was around and it happens to be called Metal. So you might say that I don't like this music because it's characterized as metal but despite that fact.

Many of the artists on my list are of that newly discovered style which for the purpose of this review I will call - NWOEPM [New Wave of European Progressive Metal]. Yes, I borrowed from that old abbreviation NWOBHM, so I'm a copycat, sue me!

So, you say, there are lots of lists, is your lists better than anybody elses? Honestly, probably not, though I would like to point out a few things.

Anybody's list (mine included) is by nature, subjective. There are, though, a couple reasons why my list might be more interesting than the other lists. One, where most members lists are selected from a narrow collection of CDs, my list, as a CD seller, is taken from probably 300-400 Metal CDs. Two, whereas the majority of the lists that I have perused pretty much stay in mainstream or popular Heavy Metal, I'm going to provide two lists, one for the popular Heavy Metal and one for the NWOEPM artists, which you may but probably are not familiar with.

Now, it you are thoroughly familiar with the standard Heavy Metal releases and are looking for a little more, something a little different, you may find my NWOEPM list of interest. If not, you may find my popular metal list and most of the other lists more to your liking.

The Ten Best Classic Metal Albums of the last Twenty-five Years

10] Powertrip - Monster Magnet(June 6, 1998) - A monster album from a monster group. At sixty plus minutes this is long for a hard rock/heavy metal album and gives us glimpses into space rock as well.

09] For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge(June 17, 1991) - Van Halen - I know everybody has there own favorite Van Halen album but this happens to be mine. You gotta admit, from Poundcake to Top of the world, this really does have a lot of great songs on it and Right Now was a fixation song of mine.

08] The Wake of the Magellan(April 8, 1998) - Savatage - Call this an achievement award for being a consistent though under appreciated band. More than any other band except maybe Ayreon, Savatage has led the resurgence of concept albums.

07] Use Your Illusion II(Sept. 1991) - Guns and Roses - A close call with Use your Illusion I but II gets the nod on the strength of "Breakdown", "Estranged", "Pretty Tied up" and "You Could be Mine".

06] Metallica - Metallica(Aug. 1991) - 1991 was a great year for mainstream metal and Metallica's Black Album was one of the years mainstays being the no. 1 album of the year and having five top hundred hits.

05] The Seventh Son of a Seventh Son - Iron Maiden(1988) - Yes there are lots of great Ironmaiden albums but with "Only the Good Die Young", "Seventh So of a Seventh Son" "Moonchild" and "the Evil that Men Do", how many can claim to be better.

04] Savage Amusement - Scorpions(1988) - I picked this over Love at First Sting because there just isn't a bad song on the album.

03] Images and Words - Dream Theater(1992) - Another close call with Awake and Change of Seasons, This is the ultimate Progressive Metal album.

02] Aenima - Tool(Oct. 1, 1996) - Another masterful album. Actually a tie with Operation Mindcrime for the greatest metal(albeit with an industrial flavor) album to date.

01] Operation Mindcrime - Queensryche(Apr 27, 1988) - Obviously 88 was a banner metal year with three of my top ten albums including the best all around and the best concept album of all time.
