Re: Great Stuff, Duane (Reply to this comment)

Thanks Paul,
Yes, Change of Seasons is right up there but in reality so are dozens.
Re, Kings X, I probably have never really given them a proper chance. I did download a couple of their songs but those songs did not do enough for me to follow up. The same could be said of Fates Warning and Vanden Plas. I am enjoying Vanden Plas right now, so with time I'll give Kings X a fair shot.
Thanks for the congrats. on my anniversary.

Great Stuff, Duane (Reply to this comment)
by pduval69
..and congrats on the 1st anniversary. Great list here, including some of the left-of-center stuff. Just IMHO, Images and Words was a good album, particularly the Public Enemy samples on Take The Time, but I just love A Change of Seasons (the song and album) to death, more than anything else they've ever done. And since you do like the prog sound...what, no King's X? Hum?????

In addition to Green Carnation's Light of Day..., I also have Beseech's Soul's Highway on order, among other things. Looking forward to it.
I, like OMM, can't get into Opeth. I tried Blackwater Park, and while I recognize the skillfull musicianship, somehow it just didn't work for me.
However, I'm with you 110% on Penumbra! We really need a more powerful word than "awesome".... I just can't think of one... there probably isn't a word good enough to describe them.

Aina - Nope I havent heard the new release Days of Rising Doom - The Metal Opera...but I will! :)
Regarding Stratovarius, Elements Part 1 was actually a very strong album while Part 2 was a very different metal album with more of a heavy metal vibe. Part 1 is faster and more Epic...
Souls Highway is really an awesome gothic flavored metal album, well worth looking into. Beseech has released a new album entitled Drama but it really is not as good as Souls Highway...
Adagio and Vanden Plas remind me most of Dream Theater!
Edguy simply set the power metal world on fire with with their new album Hellfire Club!
Penumbra one word review: AWESOME!
Opeth - Damnation is really an acoustic progressive rock album. If at all possible, try to get your hands on a copy of Still Life as it has a bit of everything the band is all about. Of course, Blackwater Park is a classic!
Later...

As you know it's tough to narrow these lists down. I probably left a couple dozen other great albums off that are less than a half star behind the rest.
Regarding your list I haven't had the pleasure on some and I agree on others if I were to expand my list.
Here's your list with my comments:
10. Stratovarius - Elements Part 1 - 2003
I've got Part 2 but I've never heard Part 1
09. Nightwish - Century Child - 2002
Good choice, on my runner up list
08. Sirenia - An Elixir for Existence - 2004
Definitely a great choice
07. Pain of Salvation - Remedy Lane - 2002
Great choice
06. Beseech - Souls Highway - 2002
Haven't heard
05. Vanden Plas - Beyond Daylight - 2002
Have but haven't listened to yet
04. Edguy - Hellfire Club - 2004
I ordered this but they were out.
03. Opeth - Blackwater Park - 2001
Sorry, I can't get into Opeth, though I'm trying with Damnation
02. Penumbra - Seclusion - 2003
Obviously I like Penumbra, I just don't know if they belong in this rarefied atmosphere
01. Adagio - Underworld - 2003
Ditto
Thanks for your alternate list, It's a good one.
On another note I've got Aina on order and can't wait to get it. Have you heard it?
Catch ya later. Ciao, OMM

Careful, you may want to write a review, Green Carnation Saves the World.
I look forward to seeing your list.

Your list more interesting than mine? Ha...I don't think so! (Reply to this comment)

Anybody's list (mine included) is by nature, subjective. There are, though, a couple reasons why my list might be more interesting than the other lists.
Interesting...hummmmm!
First of all, your classic metal list includes some interesting selections!
Secondly, your NWOEPM list also includes some interesting selections, although I do have an alternate list for your perusal... ;)
10. Stratovarius - Elements Part 1 - 2003
09. Nightwish - Century Child - 2002
08. Sirenia - An Elixir for Existence - 2004
07. Pain of Salvation - Remedy Lane - 2002
06. Beseech - Souls Highway - 2002
05. Vanden Plas - Beyond Daylight - 2002
04. Edguy - Hellfire Club - 2004
03. Opeth - Blackwater Park - 2001
02. Penumbra - Seclusion - 2003
01. Adagio - Underworld - 2003
(I must also admit that several of your selections would have made it onto my list as well, but I didnt want to copy your list...)
Later OMM!

nice list (Reply to this comment)

As a matter of fact I have my own Top Ten Metal list in draft. I was also thinking of separating the older "classics" from my newer favorites, so I may end up following your format. And I like your term NWOEPM!
I'm waiting for Light of Day, Day of Darkness to arrive in the mail, as I strongly suspect it will be included.
