Neptune washer (Reply to this comment)
by beachlife
$300 + to replace touch panel, moldy gasket, bad smell, spin cycle unreliable, questionable cleaning results, clothes destroyed by bleach dispenser that retained bleach from white load and then dispensed it over colored clothing. No more Maytags for me.

I would not repurchase a Neptune (Reply to this comment)
by tempest76
Just paid $331.02 for a new Wax Motor and Circuit Board to fix the "spin cycle failure" problem. This has happened to the other 3 Neptune owners I know, as well. The repair man didn't have to run any diagnostics - he drove up, I told him the problem, and he immediately told me "That'll be around $325".... Apparently the Wax Motor has a high failure rate, and when it fails it causes the Printed Circuit Board to burn out. Hmmm, I guess Maytag could have at least sent out a recommendation to replace the Wax Motor before the more expensive Circuit Board was burned.

This is ridiculous for a machine that cost $1000. I will *never ever* purchase a Maytag product.

I hope you will understand that I am in shock to see the opinions of these good consumers. I too am an extreme case of a picky consumer, and I tried all resources, and found the Neptune Washers (and driers) to be the "top of the line" and new and innovative. However, I had the motor set on fire, which smoldered and extinguished itself, but not before it set off the shreaking noise of the fire alarm. Of course it happened after 2 1/2 years post purchase. I had the guy come out, replace the motor, and he suggested to replace the belt as well (AFTER 2 1/2 years!) and paid $$$ Anyway, I cannot believe the amount of people that are complaining...I thought it was just me, and I am beginning to find out that perhaps MAYTAG is not cut out to be as good as it rated. My old junky Sears model lasted 25 years, and had no problems at all! The drier already broke its clip(male) and when I went to replace it, the adjoining piece broke off, so it took me more than 2 weeks to have the drier working in fine order. So tell me, are you still defending the Neptune?

Don't abandon your front loader yet (Reply to this comment)
by hermanr
When we lived in Germany, we had a front load washer that worked fantastic, as long as you didn't use TOO MUCH SOAP! (Like about a quarter of what a top loader uses). Item two: We never replaced a single item of clothing in the 3 years we lived there and used that washer. We replaced almost every item of clothing withing 6 months of returning to the US and starting to use a top loader again (not a Maytag top loader) We then switched to a Maytag top loader. It wasn't quite as hard on the clothing as the old machine, but it was still harder on them then a front loader. The Neptune not only saves water and electricity, it will also lower your clothing replacement bill.

I haven't looked into the some of the other problems, but the door lock problem is fairly easy to fix. permanently I believe. Replace Q6 with a MAC97A8 (as built, it is a MAC97A6) and while you are doing so replace Q3, Q9, and Q17 (these are timer, cold water valve and hot water valve triacs) also with MAC97A8's. (The MAC97A6 is a 400 Volt triac, The MAC97A8 is the same triac but rated at 600 volts) If you do this, the control board will be able to withstand much higher house power voltage surges and be a lot less likely to fail. As I have stated, I haven't analyzed a failed motor and motor control board yet, but I am willing to bet that voltage surges are the root of those problem also. (Hint: Maytag has designed the new surface mount boards for the latest version of this machine to include a feature that shuts down the electronics if the house power exceeds 133 volts.) My calculations show that, at least the control board will die at 140 VAC line voltage. The Old style high voltage safety circuits fire at 150 VAC.

In defense of the Maytag engineers, all standard engineering calculations show that the 400 Volt triac is more that good enough. My experience has been (with other electronics, not appliances) that 120 VAC house power fluctuates enough that a line triac needs to have a 600 volt rating to really be safe.

Warning about Maytag Neptune Washers!!!!!!!!!! (Reply to this comment)
by hollyponsell
I purchased my maytag neptune washer and dryer in febuary 2002. I read the eopinions and found nothing negative at the time, heard about the mold problems but was assured my model was new and improved. So I went to my local store paid $1500 for the set. IT HAS BEEN A NIGHTMARE EVER SINCE!! DO NOT COUNT ON A FRIENDLY MAYTAG CUSTOMER SERVICE PERSON.1800-688-9900. THE FIRST THING YOU WILLHERE IS,"IF YOU HAVE A GENAIRE ELITE REFRIGERATOR OR NEPTUNE WASHER PLEASE PRESS 3." HELLO WARNING BELLS WENT OFF. MAYTAG WOULD NOT DESIGNATE A LINE TO THIS. LET ME FIRST START BY SAYING MY NEW AND IMPROVED MODEL MOLDED WITHIN 6 MONTHS. THEY CAME OUT REPLACED THE MOLD KIT AND 6 MONTHS LATER IT MOLDED AGAIN. MY CLOTHES WOULD SMELL SOUR EVEN AFTER JUST WASHING. YOU HAD TO RUN A GALLON OF BLEACH IN THE LOADER IT SELF TO FRESHEN THE $1000.00 MACHINE MONTHLY. THEN 1 1/2 YAERS LATER IT BLOWS. TAKES MY TECHNICIANS REPLACING EVERY PART ON IT AND IT STILL DOESN'T WORK!! MAY TAG WILL,"NOTE MY DISSATISFACTION."
THEY SAID THEY WOULD SEND ME A NEW ANTI BACTERIAL GASKET FOR EXTREME SITUATIONS LIKE MINE AND A FRESHENING KIT TO USE ONCE A MONTH ALONG WITH A LINT BRUSH TO USE ON THE FINE BRISTLES IN THE LOADER. SO NOW MY MACHINE REQUIRES MORE MAINTENCE THAN MY CAR!! BOTTOM LINE IS THERE IS NO SIMPATHY
OR HELP FROM MAYTAG. BE VERY WEARY AND CHOOSE ANOTHER MODEL. IT IS NO FASTER,DOESN'T GET STAINS OUT ANY BETTER IF ANYTHING WORSE. YOU CAN'T SOAK YOU CLOTHES OVER NIGHT, JUST A PRESET TIMER OF PRE SOAK 30 MIN MAX. SO IF YOU HAVE KIDS FORGET IT. I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW HOW MANY DISATIFIED CUSTOMERS THERE ARE WITH THIS OVERPRICED MACHINE.

I am currently having the problem with the neptune washing machine. It will not spin and release the water. When we had the repair people from maytag look at the machine they said the the machine had too much soap and had to be cleaned . "The Neptune has a brain and is sensing too much soap and we should reduce the amount of soap we are using. We reduced the amount of soap, the repair person said there is nothing wrong with the washer, yet it still won't spin and release the wter. Can anyone tell me what to do?

I feel your pain! (Reply to this comment)

I loved your review. You have the rare talent of injecting humor into a situation that is not funny at all. I like the way you express yourself. I hope you have posted as many reviews on as many sites as possible.

My parents have been faithful to Maytag since they got married over 35 years ago. They were always pleased with Maytag until they got the Neptune! It has been terrible! I don't need to restate the problems that other reviewers have mentioned. I feel so sorry for my parents, and for anybody else who bought this expensive machine, thinking that you get what you pay for. In this case, you pay for what you already paid for. It's sad, and I am disgusted with Maytag. They need to EAT THIS MISTAKE! Maytag needs to offer replacements for dissatisfied customers who have already suffered long enough! My mother is thinking about contacting DATELINE to let them investigate the situation.

I have an MAH3000 and I believe calling it a Corvair is generous. I just got off the phone with Maytag. I'm having to have the second tub enclosure installed in a year. 3 hours of labor and I get to pay for it again!

On top of that, I have had to replace 3 master control boards, the pump, the door seal, and the door lock motor. I don't buy the "this is evolving--be patient with the engineers" baloney. The design is inherently flawed in the fundamentals. There is nothing exotic about a drum bearing, but mine has now failed twice. And in order to replace it, you have to replace the whole drum enclosure--a big $200+ dollar part, if you have to pay for it!

And the poor "underworked" Maytag repairman tells me there's a bunch more who have the same doggone problems! Talk about false advertising--there ought to be a class-action suit on the Neptune and their advertising.

This wash machine is expensive from the get-go and adding up my out-of-pocket charges, I've paid for it twice. Yes, the Maytag people are nice, but it would have been less expensive for both of us if they would have given me a new Neptune--or better yet, two of their low-tech top loaders!

I'm just trying to figure out at what point to cut my losses and walk away from it!

Neptune issues (Reply to this comment)
by appliance_pro
Conceptual products always have their initial trial failures. Comparing the Neptune to the Corvair, however, is a bit overstated. It is understandable that you were dissatisfied when the machine was delivered with a problem. Had the dealer gone ahead and exchanged the machine, I feel that your grievances would be diminished. I have been in the appliance industry for over 27 years, both as a factory technician and a business owner. During this time, I have seen a huge transformation of the industry as a whole, leaning toward energy conservation and innovation.
The Neptune was no exception. Your MAH4000 is actually the second series of Neptune washer. It has several design improvements over the MAH3000 (which I own), including a re-designed door boot which resists mildewing. Further models, such as the MAH5500 and the MAH7500 have even more features, such as water heating, which further enhance the machines' energy ratings. I calculated that my Neptune saved me about 5,000 gallons of water last year alone! Since I am on a well and septic system, I value the fact that the wash cycles only use about 4 gallons of water, compared to 17 or 18 on top-loaders.
Yes, there are things on this type of machine which are more succeptible to failure versus a standard machine. This is because the technology is still evolving. Frigidaire, Whirlpool, Miele and other manufacturers now make front-load washers, and the price ranges are similar to Maytag's Neptune. Each of these brands have their own peculiar types of failures. I see them every day. If your Neptune had problems, the parts are covered for 2 years. Maytag is usually very congenial about taking care of the service charges as well, even after 2-3 years, if the product has shown to be problematic. It all depends on which number you call to get assistance. If you go thru your local dealer, chances are you will get shrugged off to Maytag Factory Service if your parts are under warranty. The best number to call if you have an issue with your Neptune is 1-888-688-9900. This puts you in touch with a Maytag Solutions manager, who is capable of helping you thru a dilemma.
Keep in mind that if Maytag made defective products, they would never sell. Neptunes are sold as fast as they are produced. Be patient with your new machine, and be mindful that the engineers are quietly working behind the scenes to improve any area which shows signs of weakness. Some of these engineers have actually ridden with me on a day of service calls just to see what kind of failures were occurring in the field. At least with a reputable company such as Maytag, you have continued improvement and support after the purchase. If you have been shown otherwise, I would appreciate your comments.

I to had problems with Maytag and it was for my cooktop. Never again will I buy anything from them as their customer service is nil and their products just don't hold up for me.

I hope things work out better for you.
