Keeping your skates in good condition is a lot less painful than a new pair will be.

Automatic skate sharpeners (Reply to this comment)
by redfish2005
After reading your very informative artical, I have to disagree with your assesment on automatic skate sharpeners. I've had skates sharpened for 30 years in a hundred different places. I find that 1 of 5 are very good, but the vending machine sharpeners do a great job every time. They never sharpen beyond the existing profile and the groove is centered every time without high siding my blade. Moreover they wet grind which is far superior to dry grind. My blades last twice as long and hold an edge much longer without causing chatter when I stop hard. I believe the worst wet grind machines can do a better job than the best humans never mind some kid getting $7 per hour to rush my blades into the garbage.

Glad to be of assistance. That is one of the most common mistakes I see. Perhaps it is because skate makers have such a propensity for longer than required laces.

Great review! I didn't realize that you weren't supposed to tie skates around at the ankles, but low and behold checking other sites this is common knowledge - well thanks for the tip.
