Hey Nicole!

Yes I have all my old reviews on alert still - though the alerts don't always actually come through!! :-D

Glad you enjoyed this trash...

I am not entirely certain as to whether you still have this review on your alerts, but I could not resist the temptation to write a comment, in case it is. Sometimes, portraits of paltry prose can be quite artistic. I certainly found that yours fit that description.

by captaind
You're always welcome to disagree! :-P

The point I was trying to make is that people shouldn't review something unless they can review it properly... but then everyone's got their own idea of what constitutes a "proper" review anyway!

It's Epinions' own policy to only allow English-language, otherwise I'd agree with what you said. Or you could have a system like Ciao operate where there's a different site for each country / language.

If I can't get into a book at all and gave up reading it I wouldn't consider writing a review as I wouldn't know enough but that's just my way of doing things.

Thanks for the comment! (And the "slight" disagreement that was longer than some peoples' reviews!! ;-O)

A slight disagreement... (Reply to this comment)

I've got to disagree with you on a few parts here - mainly the negative reviews such as "this (whatever) is awful because I couldn't read/play/watch it".

There are some 30,000,000 books out there - probably more. I don't have time to read all of them. If you can't read more then a page or two of a book, let me know so that I can move down the next one in line. Same thing for games, same thing for movies. I find reviews that say a book is too boring to read at the very least helpful and if the author is convincing enough, very helpful.

The same goes for online stores. If there are 800 online stores and one of them has customer service so bad that Joe New takes 1/2 hour out of their day to rant about it, I want to know about his awful experience. That way I can avoid that unpleasant experience myself.

I also must disagree slightly on the foreign language issue; I think that Epinions would benefit from some foreign language reviews. Perhaps Epinions can get a site like Epinions.com.fr or something. It would just broaden our user base.

I say slightly disagree because I'm pretty sure this site would be very confusing and frustrating if every time you got a review it was in some wacky language you couldn't understand. Still, I think additional languages would broaden our user base.

This is not a writer's site; it is a consumer's site. The more information we have here, the merrier. This site is not about objective reviews. We are here to say what we think, not objectively dissect a product. Did you like it? Why? Did you hate it? Why? And if the 'why' reason is that you couldn't read it, tell me why you couldn't read it and leave it at that.

If you had a book written entirely like your last paragraph, hopefully you'd toss it away before you had read three pages. And more hopefully, you'll tell me about it so I don't waste my money on it.

Well, the other points in your article I agree with, especially the formatting problems. That is the only thing I can't take, although I dont think I have ever changed my ratings because of the formatting problems. It's just something that bugs me.

Thanks for listening -

Actually I think there must be a really special skill involved in writing something that absolutely nobody can understand - it's like creating a new language that no-one speaks.

I certainly wouldn't suggest that you were in any way guilty of this, 29th... I just think it's a failing on the part of everyone else if they don't understand your stuff... (never could work out what on earth you were talking about myself, but I realise that was my failing, not yours...)

Marcy... you just reminded me... I'd forgotten that one, and the blatantly copied from a bad Amazon.com review... and some I've seen recently that go (literally):

BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH

I Could Put Up With Every One Of These Except For The LAST One... (Reply to this comment)

["In what way has the zeitgeist of our generation been illuminated as merely an interpolation of the urban mythology that has grown out of fear and hatred, among those whose intellects have been challenged only by supposed inspiration? What zest for life drove these inconsequential hereditary perplexities into the very existence of hyperbolic reasoning? And what the hell am I talking about?"]

What kind of a supercilious, pompous, pretentious, full-of-himself IMBECILE; what self-indulgent, double-talking, obfuscating, thesaurus-abusing ASS, would attempt to pass off such moronic, self-absorbed drivel as intelligent (or for that matter, intelligible) writing?! Are there REALLY idiots at epinions who presume to write this sort of SHITE!? ...Absolutely frightening! I mean, what's the point of writing something if NO ONE can understand it? WHAT IS THE POINT?!

Why that's just rubbish... absolute RUBBISH, Wendy! As a matter of fact, I confirmed the fact that Americans almost unanimously use the term "rubbish;" NOT "garbage," with my garbagemen. (I spoke to them about this trash on "garbage day;" thursday, just as they were emptying the garbage from my garbage pails into their garbage truck.)

Therein lies the rubbish,

Great job (Reply to this comment)

Another example would be the guy who gave a lengthy read about the difference between the HDTV and a standard TV, but failed to mention any details of the specific TV he was supposedly reviewing.

He couldn't understand why anyone wouldn't think his review wasn't VH because anyone researching the TV should have already gotten all of this information from the website.

Anyway, I enjoyed your review, as usual!

I was watching for something that would condemn me more than the ones you listed...but I guess I'm relatively safe. My biggest pet peeve:

"I shall now list the technical specs of the product (which I got from the “View Details” page on epinions) with no additional information and hope I get “Very Helpful” ratings."

Drives me NUTS.

Or Nuts-er.

Great non-examples, D.

Just realised I've spent so much time replying to comments that I've no time left to write a new review! Aaauuurrrggghhhh.....

...and the humor never Stops... You're pretty comical Dave.... Now, to be honest, I don't go into the express reviews too often, just sometimes, I have to say those reviews you warned us about, well I pass over them, I don't even bother to read those. Sad, but True, why waste my time? But now you've sparked my interest, I just may take a run through some express reviews more often. =) So while I'm doing that, and having some entertainment, you can get back to your writing... and have a Great Day~

Ah Lynda, you obviously don't spend much time looking at the Express Reviews section... (you don't need to read very far in those to realise how awful they are - other times of course you try to steer newbies towards writing longer reviews because some of them have real talent). But yes, in some cases, it really is that bad. I just wish I had the natural talent to be as awful as that.

A sequel? Quite possibly... but not just more of the same, I think, it'll have to be something a bit different and perhaps even genuinely helpful.
