I've driven a few cars with those computers - I think they're very educational, though sometimes a bit distracting.

Thanks for the visit and the comment.

Your mileage will vary--- (Reply to this comment)

Thanks for the instructions. I've done this all my driving life, but I suspect there are some who don't know how.

For the first time, I have a car that has a digital trip computer that displays, among other things, "instantaneous" mileage updated every 5 seconds, and "average " mileage, a moving average over the previous ten minutes.

Tracking instantaneous mileage, it's amazing and interesting to see how much it varies, even when driving at constant speed on the freeway! And also the things that effect it---wind, grade, speed, acceleration, etc. But, in any tankful, it tends to average out to a fairly consistent average, higher on freeway than around town, of course.

Good essay! Thanks!

Re: These modern cars don't use up so much fuel these days, especially if they have been designed well (Reply to this comment)

Yes, fuel efficiency has certainly risen over the years. My 1963 Ford Galaxie with a six-cylinder engine only got about 16 MPG - but that's when gas cost $0.24 per gallon. The technological strides made in the interests of fuel efficiency are amazing! The Hummer II, if built in the 1950s, would have probably gotten about four MPG...

Oh, Lord, I forgot about the mixture of metric and English systems. Small wonder your countrymen ride the trains!

Lessee, that Accord has a 14.7-gallon tank, right? and the gas in North Austin is running $1.73/gallon of unleaded regular and $1.93 for premium, right? That means you're getting....

Heck, I can't figure it out...

I used to do this all the time in England. (Reply to this comment)

It is litres and miles there. A friend of mine was telling me with the exchange rate being around $1.80 to the £. A gallon of gas in England is around 8 bucks.

I really don't give a damn what I pay for gas here in Florida. $1.79 looks pretty good to me.

I will be back home (England) next month. One garage wanted $100 deposit for gas, when renting a car. That was for the tank full. I don't think so.

I have complained a lot lately about it costing $30 to fill my Accord, especially since my hobbies (I must turbo everything I see!) cost me money at the pump, not just the garage. Course I wouldn't trade a 20# daily driver for anything . . . except maybe mileage in the very low twenties. Personally, I use Viscon (formerly GTA Pure Hydrocarbon) to eek out a little more. A little messy at the pump sure, but worth it as my ten tank average with it (yes, I've been using this stuff for years) gets me an almost 10% increase, but I digress. :)

Wha?? My motorcycle only takes 2.4 Gallons to fill up! It gets better mileage than your hummer! And the HONDA HYBRID! WOW!

Just kidding

AS crazy as it seems, your entry is necessary.
Many people make the mistake you speak of - in fact, a friend of ours who drives a Suburban,
borrowed our Mercedes-Benz SUV, which is a lot
smaller AND has a smaller gas tank than the
Suburban. Our friend remarked to my wife that
the Mercedes was so much better on gas - took only
$25.00 to fill versus $45.00 for the Suburban.
In reality the Suburban gets a few miles less per gallon, but nothing even close to the difference
she was assuming.
