"This is Acid Reflux, Not Cancer..." THE DARKNESS Land in Boston, April 3, 2004

Forget that whole "garage rock revival" thing...The Darkness will be what saves rock and roll from itself.

Mike,

Read my album review, hell, I CALLED them the real life Spinal Tap in the title

Seeing them live though, they have a spark, Justin makes the same connection all truly great frontmen make (Bono, DLR, Freddie Mercury), that connection with the audience, it's just something he has

And while their music is rather retro, it's refreshing just to hear meat and potatoes rock and roll WITH FULL sense of irony on the radio...I think you underestimate how much these guys know about themselves

I don't know if they'll last (something tells me they won't, because too many people are turned off to Justin's voice), but they definitely have the talent and the charisma to

Sure to get lost in Cleveland on the way to a gig (Reply to this comment)

Matt:

Nice review, but a more apt comparison for them is probably Spinal Tap (without the sense of irony). These guys are destined to be a guilty pleasure, nothing more. Anyone who lived through the real 70s has already heard enough Queen, Kiss, Judas Priest, Foghat, to last a lifetime. These guys are fun, but to compare them (even tangentially) to U2 is just plain... well, silly. cheers

The Boston venue had 2500 people, eh? That makes me glad that I made the trek to Providence to see them then. Not that I had a choice since I couldn't get tickets to the Boston gig.

My review is eerily similar to yours...

Yeah, I had heard a while ago that "Love is only a Feeling" was the next single...Growing on Me would've worked well, a nice little edgy pop rock song to set up the ballad as the third single

But oh well, not much one can do

How many "Re:'s" can you fit into one title? I didn't mind "Love Is Only A feeling" the first time I heard it, on the album, but I started to dislike it after that. Seeing that video, watching Justin hawkins having a wet dream about Axl Rose, it sickens me. At least "I believe In A Thing Called Love"'s video was quite funny.

hell yeah. not only have we all heard "love is only a feeling" about ten million times if we've already got the album (it's easily one of the best songs), but then we have to put up with it on _constant_ rotation on all the british music channels. you guys will get it soon.

someone tell justin hawkins to get a new smile. the current one is starting to annoy me...

great review, matt

The video is quite good, except the beginning. Trust me, it seems funny at first but it is completely over the top. I can't see "GOW" being released stateside-expect "Love Is Only A Feeling". GOW wasn't huge in England, so Atlantic may not release it stateside. But "I Belive In A Thing Called Love" and "Love Is Only A Feeling" were both huge, so you may be seeing the latter as a single (I already know that "I Belive In A Thing Called Love" was a hit).

I haven't seen the GOM video, don't think it was released in the States (or if it was, it was back before anyone cared about these guys)...I'm actually surprised GOM isn't being pushed next, it was a huge sing along at the show

It is a concern to Darkness fans that Justin's voice cracks up. It must have been only six months ago the guy cancelled a load of shows because he couldn't hit those falsetto notes. Fans are going to start telling the guy to quit smoking.

I actually think that the videos are kind of funny, even if I don't like the music. Apart from the opening of the "Growing On Me" video, which we won't discuss on this oh so clean website.

I think the key with them will be A) Justin's voice holding up, an obvious concern and B) how many other "fun" rock and roll acts labels snap up in order to make a quick buck...

They have an undeniable air of specialness to them...it's not something I felt on the album, but in a live setting, well, all I can say is WOW...

They need to take themselves a tad bit more seriously though (at least in their videos, which are ridiculous), and their second album will go a long way in deciding whether they last or not

The new AC/DC would be a better comparison, but the U2 in Boston thing just felt right last night

yeah. You are. And you know it. In any case, I can't help but wonder about the longevity of the Darkness. I love 'em (you know that) and respect their creativity and retro coolness. I just hope that the success they've had in the UK can further trickle over to the US.

Great review. You know I'm jealous.

Great Review... (Reply to this comment)

I don't think Nirvana took out the fun of rock, they just took out the superficiality of it. I don't think I'll see the Darkness because tickets are sold out and I'm more anxious to see Bowie but from what you said in the review, they might be awesome live. I think their album is pretty good and they must be better live. Great Review man and yes, Jet does suck. If I hear that f*cking song one more time, I'll kill someone.

I'm not sure but I think Matt was saying that the fun part of rock was getting over the top until Nirvana destroyed it.

Hawkins's is a bit of an idiot. The guy cancels shows continuously because he cares more about his cigarettes than he does the fans. He loses his voice continuously because he can sing with his throat problems but not hit those falsettos.

I don't like the Darkness, but if you do I can't argue against it. Your review seemed quite funny as I'm sure if Justin actually said 'mom' he did it mockingly, as here in the UK we call our mothers 'mum'. Sound slike if I liked the Darkness I'd have to catch a show.

Nice review

Nirvana (Reply to this comment)

I wouldn't say Nirvana brought fun back into rock and roll. I would say they brought some reality and depth back into it. If anything, they took the fun out of it that bands like Warrant and Poison were exploiting. I don't see how anyone could take any of those hair bands seriously, now or then. Nirvana is given a great deal of credit in that regard for changing music, but one also must give credit to Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains for also creating sounds that bands wanted to emulate. I imagine you agree with these sentiments.

The Darkness is not really my thing. Your comparisons to Freddy Mercury and other over the top rockers are apt ones. If they put on a great show and entertain their audience that is all people should worry about. Music needs bands like The Darkness to have them remember that sometimes life isn't supposed to be taken too seriously.

Thanks for the review.
