The Bottom Line Ginger, Marilyn, Doris, Barbra, Julie, Goldie, Kathleen, Shirley, Teri and Hayley...

To make this list these ladies had to have been in at least three silver screen comedies that I love. Unfortunately many wonderful actresses come just short on an oversight of mine or an inability to find some films, such as Carole Lombard, Claudette Colbert, Shirley Temple and Gracie Allen. I haven’t included newer actresses that you’ve heard of because these legendary comediennes, often neglected, will never go out of style, certainly not for me! While there are comedic brunettes and redheads, they’re for another essay.

Ginger Rogers: I’ve enjoyed most of her work with Fred Astaire, including Top Hat, The Gay Divorcee and Swing Time, as well as Monkey Business with Cary Grant, Follow the Fleet with Gene Kelley etc., and Tom, Dick and Harry. Ginger was a screwball and a lovely dancer. All great fun.

Marilyn Monroe: Easily makes the list with classics like Some Like It Hot with crossdressers Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis, The 7-Year Itch, Monkey Business, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and others as listed in my loving tribute. She was ditsy, a bombshell and a sensuous singer. See:

Doris Day: Paired with Rock Hudson and Tony Randall, she had winners with Pillow Talk, Send Me No Flowers, That Touch Of Mink and Lover Come Back, but I enjoyed others like Tea For Two. Known for her wide-eyed innocence and singing.

Barbra Streisand: With Ryan O’Neal she gave us What’s Up, Doc? and The Main Event; also Funny Girl, Hello, Dolly! and The Owl and the Pussycat. She might get on peoples’ nerves in the movies as in real life, but she can laugh at herself which you must admire and can sing wonderfully.

Goldie Hawn: Having started on Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In, she’s totally lovable in Shampoo, Private Benjamin, Foul Play with Chevy Chase and Overboard with Kurt Russell. I haven’t seen her more recent work like The Banger Sisters, but have heard that she’s still making audiences laugh.

Julie Andrews: Much more than a great singer, she charms my socks off with Mary Poppins, Victor/Victoria, S.O.B. and Thoroughly Modern Millie. Mrs. Blake Edwards plays up to the audience and gives us a good time.

Kathleen Turner: Michael Douglas often was her leading man, such as in Romancing the Stone, Jewel of the Nile and War of the Roses; also hilarious in Serial Mom and Peggy Sue Got Married. Like the other actresses she has tremendous chemistry with her leading men.

Shirley MacLaine: She started out as a brunette in Alfred Hitchcock’s dark comedy, The Trouble With Harry, made it big with Jack Lemmon in The Apartment and wowed us again with Peter Sellers in Being There. Like the other actresses Shirley does drama, but these are definitely my favorites. Catch her masturbating for Peter!

Teri Garr: I’ve loved her in the comedy classics Young Frankenstein with Gene Wilder, Mr. Mom, Tootsie with Dustin Hoffman and After Hours. She’s pretty and spacey, a winning combination.

Hayley Mills: Best known for Disney’s The Parent Trap, she also entertained us with That Darn Cat! and The Trouble With Angels directed, interestingly enough, by actress Ida Lupino. She’s more of a conniving prankster with a heart.

I’m sure I’ve left out some fantastic blonde actresses in comedy, such as Mia Farrow (Woody Allen movies), Joan Blondell, Billie Burke and Constance Bennett (all in Topper movies), Mae West (She Done Him Wrong), Debbie Reynolds (Singin’ in the Rain) and others slipping my mind besides the ones noted in the beginning. Please leave a comment if you think of them. Thanks!
