Ever since my high school days in France, I have had a thing for coconut flavored rum. It’s got a smooth taste and goes well with fruit juices without tasting overly sweet. I was only more delighted this summer to find a new kind of flavored rum- Passion Fruit. Living in Southern Florida, it’s hard to escape summer drinks involving rum- especially mojitos. All this is how I came about my new favorite summer drink.

Captain Morgan’s Parrot Bay Passion Fruit Rum is sweet, yet light and not so strong that I can’t enjoy a beverage or two. It is 21% alcohol, so I don’t feel like my breath could start a car engine, although it’s definitely an adult beverage- yes, you must be over 21 to legally enjoy this beverage. I don’t usually consider myself a big rum drinker, but this fruity rum is very smooth, without a burning alcohol sensation as you drink it. This is no Bacardi 151!

The passion fruit flavor has a slight tartness to it, but overall, it is quite sweet. I prefer its subtle tastes over regular Parrot Bay Coconut Rum, as the Passion Fruit rum reminds me more of the actual passion fruit juice. It is clear, yet slightly thick and syrupy. Mixed with orange, pineapple or other citrus blend juices, this is a great poolside option. This rum makes a great frozen drink as well and can be used in place of regular rum, however the alcohol content is less. I wouldn’t consider drinking Parrot Bay Passion Fruit Rum on its own, but it has endless possibilities for drink concoctions.

So far, I have only been able to find Parrot Bay Passion Fruit Rum in a 750ml size, for $14.99, but I believe it is also sold in one liter and 50 ml sizes. I haven’t had any trouble finding the Passion Fruit variety at local liquor stores.

And now for my favorite summer drink recipe:

Fresh mint (one sprig) muddled
2 parts Parrot Bay Passion Fruit Rum
1 part (or slightly less) club soda
1 key lime or ¼ lime, cut up and squeezed
Serve over crushed ice & enjoy!
