The results are usually very helpful. I personally haven't run across any dead links in any of my search results.

Google.com quickly became my favorite search engine because it gives me more relevant results, and the results of my searches are returned very quickly.
You don't have to know exactly how something is spelled to search for it, either. Sometimes I'm searching for something and Google will return my results for what I typed in, but above them there will sometimes be a clickable link that reads "Did you really mean XXX?", with XXX being whatever it is that Google "thinks" you might be trying to search for. Most of the time, Google has been correct in guessing at what I'm searching for.
The Google environment is very plain, not loaded with a lot of advertisements. They offer advanced searching to help you narrow down your results to what you are REALLY looking for.
You results can include:
* exact words or phrases
* results excluding certain words
* 10, 20, 50 or 100 results per page
* pages written in a specified language
* searches by title or url
* image searches (BETA)
* searches using a filter
* pages updated within the last 3, 6 or 12 months
* pages only from a certain domain name
Google.com has almost 1.4 billion web pages, so there's bound to be some information here that can be useful to you.
