It's always nice not to get stiffed on a good bargain. Retail stores don't offer much help, though it does help to know your prices. Don't beleive the hype- WalMart is all cheap junk and BestBuy, more often than not, doesn't offer the "best buy." But, just because you've found it online, doesn't mean it's a bargain, either. Thankfully, with the help of mySimon, the help you need is all at your fingertips. A few clicks here, a few keystrokes there, and you should be on your way to a good bargain!
Basic Idea/Use
You type in a product name, model, or keyword, and after some minor tuning, you should be presented with a listing of quite a few websites with their pricing of the item you're looking for. Sometimes you have to be more specific and other times it helps to be more general- it all depends on what you're looking for. Once you've used it a bit, you should get the hang of it.
I stumbled upon this site through a website's recommendation or banner ad... don't know which. Anyway, I was used to the selection and overall results of C|Net at the time and after wasting a good half-hour trying to find what I wanted and getting minimal results and mediocre pricing... well, to put it lightly, I was disappointed. Waiting for the inquery to return less than you'd expect was ridiculous.
Today
Now, Simon's got a face lift- and I don't mean just their cartoon mascot. Their database is much improved over what they had to offer before. The selection of merchants has grown exponentially and the prices you'll find are downright reasonable. Thanks to these improvements you should be able to find most anything at an attractive price
There are still some lingering problems. They don't have EVERYTHING- even though you could very well visit one of the sites that turn up through their search engine and find it yourself. The item MUST be in their database and spelled exactly as it is in their database or it can't find it.
If you should have a successful inquery, you may notice some stray items that just barely made it through. They may be related, but they are not the same type of item you are looking for. For instance, you could be looking for listings on a particular camera and, along with it, also get listings for cases and batteries. Not bad, but a little annoying when you have to sift through it all.
Overall/Recommendations
Overall, though, it makes for a good online pricing service, though I wouldn't go and exclude any favorites you might have- remember they don't have everything. I would also seriously recommend trying C|Net(www.cnet.com) for consumer electronics and other goods and PriceWatch (www.pricewatch.com) for computer component and accessory pricing. Don't forget eBay(www.ebay.com), either. I've gotten good price quotes on all four- not one of them quotes nessesarily better prices than the other. If you want a good bargain, you'll do your homework and research!
