The Bottom Line A night in, an mp3 player, 1300 songs, and a big fat cigar... ahhhh let the good times roll.
Jordan Tars write off (MP3 Write Off) was too good for me to pass up. I grabbed my Nomad mp3 player and quickly threw it into shuffle mode. But before I go on, first some background I mainly listen to Hip Hop music, so the vast majority of my music collection is an eclectic range of Hip Hop. But I also have some music from other genres like soul, rock, electronic, R&B and even classical. So far Im still in the progress of putting my entire collection onto my 30gb Nomad, and am 1/3 of the way there. My Nomad currently holds over 1300 songs, all from albums, so there is a lot of stuff many people would of never of heard. The following is the best mixture I could get while the mp3 player shuffled all 1300 songs. In fact Im quite happy at the mix it spat out at me so here goes 1. Secret Wars Part 1 - Last Emperor This track is an underground Hip Hop classic, based around Last Emperor combining his two loves of comic book characters and Hip Hop. In a brilliant story telling rap, Last Emp fantasises MCs battling superheroes, and superbly raps entertaining battles all whilst changing his own lyric style to that of the MC involved. Some of the clashes mentioned involve KRS-One v Professor X, Redman v Dr. David Banner, and Method Man v Wolverine. This song has it all, its extremely clever, funny, and a joy to listen to. 2. Carnival Wyclef Jean From Wyclef Jeans very underrated Presents The Carnival album. This song could be classified under world music, with its heavy African vibe, and singing all done in french (I think its french). The track starts at a hectic pace before switching gears half way through and slowing down for a little while, and then swinging back into it. This is an addictive track that you cant help but want to dance to, its just full of rhythm, and is excellently produced by Wyclef. 3. Creation And Destruction Immortal Technique Immortal Technique is a phenomenon, an MC who spits hard core lyrics at a conscience and political level that blows the listen into smithereens. This battle track from Revolutionary Vol. 1 is a perfect showcase for his skills. The beat is unobtrusive, as Technique lets fly with some of the best battle lines one will ver hear, and still puts in some political and religious observations. Mind blowing. A quick obnoxious sample of his lines: because I allowed God to let you motherf*ckers exist Ill resurrect your aborted baby and kill it again 4. Jazzy Belle Outkast One of my favourite songs ever Jazzy Belle by the supreme talents of Outkast. The beat is soft and warm, like a blanket on a cold winter night, its truly mesmerising. The lyrics match the beats as both Big Boi and Andre rap deep introspective verses about life and love. People who think Outkasts best work is there current double album, need to seriously pick up ATLiens, they were on another level during this album, and this song is a clear symbol of that. 5. From Da Back Three Six Mafia My guilty pleasure is Three Six Mafia, with there booming southern bounce, catchy choruses, and loud obnoxious verses. This track is a good example of that, with a hypnotic bouncing synth, and braggadocio lyrics coming thick and fast from Three Six Mafia. A great song for parties, or to have pounding from your cars subwoofers hell even through my MP3 player headphones whilst Im going for a jog. 6. Medievel Times Cee-Lo Cee-Lo comes around with one of his soulfully song tunes, from the slept on album Cee-Lo Green And his Perfect Imperfections. This song takes a few listens to truly appreciate, and thankfully I have played it a lot before. Cee-Lo stamps his charmingly gruff voice over this track, giving it a soulful injection that few artists could come anywhere near. The lyrics are impressive as well, as Cee-Lo uses metaphors to portray himself as someone no one truly knows. 7. Chanson Triste (Tchaikovsky) Beijing Central Philharmonic Orchestra Now dont say Im not cultured. Well I cheated a little, in the fact my Nomad comes with 5 albums worth of the Beijing Central Philharmonic Orchestras take on the classics. From Beethoven to Strauss, its all here. However I actually have a deep love for classical music, it is so invigorating, and has an uncanny ability to meld well into the world the listener is currently in. So its not uncommon for me to have a classical education session with my mp3 player. This piano work is really quite beautiful, understated yet moving. I cant fault the Beijing Orchestra as well yeah right like I really know what a good classical performance is. 8. All Eyez On Me - Tupac Another Tupac song comes up (surprisingly, because I have only put 2 of his albums on my Nomad so far). This is the title track from his hugely successful double album of the same name. Tupac describes his position well on this track as a man in a fast moving world, whos being watched by all. One can feel for Tupac, who at this stage in his life was getting extremely paranoid, and deservingly so. Sure this is a gangsta track, but Tupac is singing with real feeling, and the whole track has a very humble approach. In fact its sad to think of Tupacs death after listening to this song. RIP Pac. 9. Who Makes You Feel - Dido First time I have really listened to this Dido song. The beat is a little annoying with its stop start nature, but I love the strings. Didos voice like always is stunning. She hits such a nice pitch that it just melts in your ears. Her lyrics are strong here, as she sings about love and being made to feel special in a relationship. I really need to spend more time with Dido, as she is most definitely one of my favourite female singers at the moment. 10. How To Rob 50 Cent First up this song begins with on eof Hip Hops unfunniest ever side shows The Mad Rapper. I never found this guy funny, and his just annoying on this joint. The beat is very minimalist, with an NWA inspired bass beat providing 50 Cent the backdrop for him to showcase his lyrical fire. 50 Cent just fires shots at everyone in the Hip Hop industry from DMX to The Rza, and Canibus to Blackstreet. Its all light hearted and reasonably funny. No doubt I can hear some of 50s much mooted talent on this track, unfortunately it all disappeared once he signed for a million big ones with Shady Records. 11. The Convo DMX Darkman X was unstoppable for a 12 month period where he posted 2 number one albums in the same period. This song from his first album perfectly displays why he was so popular. The rhymes are extremely dark, and DMX brilliantly portrays the conversation between ones good and bad sides during a moment of indecision. Its such a shame DMX fell off hard only a couple of years after doing such great tracks like this, even today this still rocks. 12. Whats Goin On Marvin Gaye Arguably the greatest album ever in my humble opinion is Marvin Gayes Whats Goin On. This socio-political album has more soul then a shoe shop. Marvin Gaye always puts in a great moving performance, with intelligent lines about the troubled world and its loss. This song is probably the most well known on the album, unfortunately being terribly remade a few times, but nothing can match this superb original. An ageless classic. 13. One More Time Daft Punk I dont mind the odd bit of electronic music, and in particular the French scene is my favourite. Daft Punk infuse great break beats, guitar riffs, and a soulful feel to this song from there Discovery album. This is super slick electronica at its best crossing the boundaries of dance and rock superbly, the time of song that can really get in your head, not to mention making you want to dance. One more time, were gonna celebrate 14. Almost There Killah Priest Killah Priest spits the deepest of deep lyrics, and this song is full of those verses. With a raw organic beat, Killah Priest takes the listener on a journey through space and time. The lyrics are incredibly dense and deep, and this track takes a few listens to before one can almost begin to understand its meanings. This is fantastic intelligent Hip Hop, with plenty of creativity and an aura of mystery. Killah Priest is maybe the most underrated lyricist ever, thats how good he is. 15. Infinite Eminem This is the title track of Eminems largely unknown debut album. A heavily Illmatic influenced song with a gentle jazz beat. Eminem gives an impressive performance, not obnoxious, but rhyming like Canibus using complicated words, letting his skills show rather then the ability to push a clever one liner. This is a really good song that shows an intelligent side of Eminem we never see any more. Well thats it. An interesting journey of Hip Hop music with some other genres thrown in. In fact putting my mp3 player on shuffle and listening away is something I do on the regular. Its so therapeutic, and also exciting as one anticipates what next song is going to come up. Everyone should try it. |
