A drunken stumble through my MP3 collection (MP3 shuffle writeoff)

The Bottom Line 15 randomly chosen songs from the ultimate Mp3 playlist (mine)

Well, after seeing the MP3 shuffle write off idea, I knew I had join (this is my first write off boys and girls. My mp3 collection is absolutely massive (I have really been working on it this year at university) and right now it sits at 2606 songs. Don’t get your hopes up for a diverse collection of songs however, with a very few exceptions I listen to only classic rock and heavy metal. I don’t even pretend to have a “diverse” music collection, I find most people who claim to have one are actually more close-minded than me and will only listen to the bullsh*t that MTV shoves down their throat. I actually get mad when people brag that they “like everything and anything”, I feel like throwing on some Amon Amarth or Lamb of God just to prove them wrong. Anyway, here it is, my 15 songs (I’ll be writing about the songs as they play, so I don’t know what will come up yet, hopefully it is a good list):

1) AC/DC- You Shook Me All Night Long
A perfect way to start this off, Back in Black was the first CD I ever owned (probably about 10 or 11 years ago) and this was my favorite song on it. Everyone knows this song it is probably their best known song. It is probably one of their best songs it has everything you would expect from AC/DC. A catchy chorus, killer guitar work, it makes me wish I could get the chance to seem them live.

2) Jimi Hendrix- Rock me baby (live)
This song is off a box set I downloaded of Jimi Hendrix, and starts with him talking to the crowd (live song). It quickly moves into your typical Jimi Hendrix esque psychedelic rock guitaring. “Rock me baby, Rock me all night long” Hendrix wails as he plays, makes me want to get up and rock out. I don’t know if this is an original Hendrix song, or a cover, either way he does a good job of it, good solo about a minute and a half in too.

3) Nirvana- Oh Me
This is actually probably one of my favorite songs off of the classic Unplugged in New York CD by Nirvana. The thing I love about this CD, is that it is so easy to sing along with. “If I had to lose a mile, if I had to touch feeling, I would lose soul the way I do, I don’t have to think, I only have to do it the results are always perfect but that’s old news” I can remember singing that at the top of my lungs with my best friends on New Year’s 2003, and whenever I hear this song it reminds me of that.

4) Dream Theater- Finally Free
The final song in the epic CD “Scenes from a memory”, this song opens up with some sort of psychiatrist talking to the listener, with a soothing guitar background. I just started getting into this CD a while ago, I have had it for a long time but never really listened to it, it is an incredible album, one of the best concept albums ever. However, I find all the songs on this CD are best if you listen to the CD as a while (all the songs on this CD are meant to be one song, but they are broken down into 11), this is the 11 minute finale, and like the rest of the CD it rocks. I think when I am done writing this I will have to listen to this CD.

5) In Flames- Episode 666
Go from Progressive rock to some melodic death metal. In Flames are often compared to Soilwork, as they both have that Swedish sound to them. I think this band is slightly overrated, and prefer Soilwork’s music to this, but they are still pretty good. This is probably my favorite song by them, has a good rocking guitar and the singing is perfect. Maybe I haven’t listened to this band enough to really get into them (it usually takes me 4 or 5 listens to an album/song before I really get into it), because this song really rocks.

6) Smashing Pumpkins- Tristessa
The Smashing Pumpkins were my favorite band for a long time, and I had the good fortune of seeing them live while they still were my favorite band (in Halifax, during summersault in 2000). I don’t think they played this song off of Gish, but that doesn’t matter, I still thought they rocked. This song is classic early 㣾s music, and always reminds me of going huckleberry picking in the summertime, because this is the tape we would always play on the way up there. Whenever I hear anything off of Gish it reminds me of good Beautiful British Columbia, the camping, the golfing, and the berry pickin’….. good times.

7) Bob Marley- Three Little Birds
When World War 3 breaks out, I’m moving to a beach in Jamaica, smoking reefers and listening to Bob Marley, that’s my plan in life. This song is one of my favorite Bob Marley songs, and is an especially good song to listen to if you’re down on life. “Don’t worry about a thing, Cause every little thing is gonna be alright” Bob Marley is one of the greatest (If not the greatest) singers of all time, and his music has helped me make sense of all the bullsh*t that happens in the world (the “War on terrorism” and “liberation of Iraq”). After listening to Bob Marley, everything just seems to make sense.

8) Lamb of God- 11th Hour
Ouch, when this song came on, it really surprised my ears, after being used to the semi-mellow Smashing Pumpkins and super mellow Bob Marley, I get hit in the face with some Lamb of God, probably one of the loudest and most intense bands out there. This song is the total opposite of the last song, while the last song claimed that “every little thing is gonna be alright” this song says “The hour of wreckoning draws near/ Judgement day is here and gone” This song is a good song about the apocalypse, and doesn’t hold back for a second.

9) Pantera- F*cking Hostile
Well, at least we got one of my #1 favorite bands in this. This is probably one of the better known Pantera songs (most likely for the in your face title and lyrics). This is a great Pantera song, off of their best album, Vulgar Display of Power, it is everything a heavy metal song should be fast, intense in your face and with a killer solo to top it all off. Pantera is the best heavy metal band ever, and this is just another reason why.

10) Dire Straits- Sultans of Swing
I love this song, I don’t know why, I just love it. Dire Straits are one of the few non-thrash bands from the 㣴s that I can stand and this is their best song. It is a good mellow tune where everything just seems to fit together perfectly. The guitar works perfectly with the singing, nothing seems out of place here.

11) Creedence Clearwater Revival- Have you ever seen the rain
CCR are one of the greatest bands ever. Their greatest hits compilation “Chronicle” is without a doubt the best greatest hits CD ever, 20 songs of pure perfection. This is another song I love to sing along with (when I’m drunk enough). This is probably one of my favorite CCR songs, but there are so many good ones it is just too hard to pick. Its really short, so I don’t have much more time to write, so I’ll finish with this- Have YOU ever seen the rain?

12) Acid Bath- Scream of the Butterfly
I don’t know how I missed this band when they’re music came out originally (this was released in 1994), but just a few months ago I got some of their stuff, and it immediately blew me away. Dax Riggs is one of the best singers I have ever heard in a long time, with a sound that is all his own. This song is one of their mellower acoustic driven songs and gives Dax a chance to shine vocally, and he does. While it is a lot slower and mellower than most of their songs, the rest of the musicians have a chance to shine to, the guitar work in this song is very intricate and well done. Dax takes center stage with the incredible, poetic lyrics that are sung just perfectly with the music- “Sunshine a house in flames/ She likes it where she gets it but its never felt the same/ Surgery in the house of dissection/ When your candle burns out I will resurrect you”

13) Johnny Cash- Cocaine Blues
Ahhh yes good old Johnny Cash some of the best music for drinking (or a hangover), the only country music that I will listen to. The first song I hear of his was his cover of “hurt” which in my opinion is better than the original (I think Nine Inch Nails are overrated). This here is a cool live song, about a guy who does some cocaine, shoots his girlfriend and then runs off. Long story short, he gets caught and sent to jail. It is not so much the lyrics, but rather the way they are sung that makes this song great.

14) Black Label Society- We Live No More
The best song that Ozzy Osbourne never sang on, Zakk Wylde does a spot on Ozzy impersonation for this song. The guitar work, like on most Black Label Society songs is top notch, making this either my #1 or #2 BLS song. BLS are a weird band, they have some songs that I absolutely love, and others which I can’t stand. Overall, however, I would say they are a good band, since they make more good songs than bad, and the good outweighs the bad.

15) Led Zeppelin- Immigrant Song
One of the best songs by my other favorite band of all time, Led Zeppelin, this is a cool song, I think it is about Vikings are something. This is actually one of the first Led Zeppelin songs I heard, way back in the day (the first was Kashmir), and after hearing it, I went out and got the four disc box set, and listened to it for about a month straight. I like everything Led Zeppelin does, from their slower, mellower songs, to their all out rockers like this one. Also, I don’t trust anyone who doesn’t like Led Zeppelin, I can understand if you don’t like Pantera, but I think Led Zeppelin is a band that everyone should listen to.

Well, I think that was a damn good list of 15 songs, and would probably make a good mixed CD (although it would have a couple weird pace changes, between super mellow and super hardcore). I hope you enjoyed reading that as much as I enjoyed writing it.
