Very funny! (Reply to this comment)
by welleducated
Excellent, as usual, and very funny. I think I'll have to reread this a few more times. I would like to get better at adding humor. I seem to be matter-of-fact unless I'm in a silly mood. I'd rather learn to be silly so it gets me in the mood, lol!
Hmmm... Are we allowed to link to articles we want to recommend to others? I just wish everyone new was pointed to this info. How much simpler and encouraging the whole process of getting started would be!
Oh, and off topic, got anything about how to get tech support to get back to us more quickly? I've been subscribed to new reviews for some people (like Ace3502) for ages but I never got alerts. I thought maybe they weren't writing. (Ha! Like Ace3502 wouldn't be writing!) It turns out I don't get notices on comments, ratings, responses to comments or... anything, really. I've emailed Epinions tech support but... never heard back from them on anything, ever. Any advice on how to get that fixed more quickly is greatly appreciated! :)
Thanks!
Once again, nice job. I'm saving the link. I'll be doling it out to people getting started. (Hope that's in the rules!) :)

...and so cleverly written, too! I very much enjoyed reading it and will be certain to heed your wise recommendations in this review, as well the counsel that you have available in your other "Member Advice" reviews! :)

...it's true, you were the one I first lost my trust virginity with (quiet sobs...) Actually I added you b/c you didn't get miffed at me for correcting your spelling (ok, you probably did, but you didn't say anything and you fixed it lickety-split). I figured that type of running-around-knees-bent-type of behavior merited some trust...
...but you never called...

Gotta throw a coupla more cents in on that one. It's music.....nothing annoys me more than music on a profile page. If I'm sitting here, reading and listening to my own preference of music on my stereo and click on somebody's profile and their music comes blasting through my speakers....well, Honey, I hit that back button so fast it'll make your head spin. I probably miss a lot of good reviews because of that.....oh, well....

I think the one thing here that annoys me more than anything else is huge profile pages that take 3 minutes to load on a dialup.
Personal images that take 3 miniutes to load on a dialup can be annoying, also.

One few more things not vitally important individually, but they contribute to your overall "trustability" make some effort with your profile page.
But not TOO much effort.
I think the one thing here that annoys me more than anything else is huge profile pages that take 3 minutes to load on a dialup. There are some members who read my stuff, and I'm still not sure who they are or what they review, because I click on them...and then it becomes clear their massive profile page isn't going to finish loading before the next ice age, so I get bored and close the window. Not that everyone should be forced to accommodate users with slow connections, but keeping your profile modest can prevent aggravation and get people to look at you when they might otherwise quit.

Hehe... a good point. I also don't like to appear to trust too may people, but as you say there are a lot of great writers here. I too pace myself to some extent (you're on my list to trust sometime in the future, btw) - I also have this thing at the moment about wanting more members to trust me than I trust... so I've slowed down a bit. (Sorry - but I will get to you eventually - after all, how could I not with comments like Notice me! Trust me, you slut.!! :-O

"I keep my WOT fairly small, because I'm picky." - oh come on - first of all you trust me, which shows a distinct lack of taste, and also you trust Carl, which shows a lack of sense... :-P
But your point is very vaild - if you don't ahve enough time to read more than a few people, it doesn't make sense to have them on your alerts and maybe it doesn't make much sense to trust them either. I have to admit it's really hard to keep up sometimes.
At the end of the day though, a good writer who doesn't go round upsetting people will end up being trusted by a fair number anyway - so I wouldn't worry, I'm sure your WOT will prosper and grow over time!

Okay... (Reply to this comment)

...I'm commenting. Notice me. Trust me, you slut.
Just (not) kidding. I have a WOT problem. I've been reading and rating a lot of people in the last few months. There are some really good and genuinely outstanding authors that I'd like to trust. Problem is, if I do that, I'd look like a TS.
My solution is probably the WOT equivalent of wearing a condom - I don't 'overtrust', pace myself, and all the while that mental list gets longer and longer.
Some good advice. An enjoyable read. I'd take you off the mental list and put you on my WOT, but I did that weeks ago. I like your style, I generally agree with you, one day (soon) I'll join your write-off, and, besides, if you're on my list, it goes to show that you can't be trusted. (Really kidding.)

Well-written, but I don't fully agree (Reply to this comment)
by msmarques
Like you, I add people to my WOT because I want to read more of their reviews. This means:
* Their reviews are well-written. They are enjoyable to read, even on those occasions when I disagree.
* More often than not, they are very helpful. Sometimes they will write H or even SH reviews, but that's not the norm IMO.
* They review products of interest to me, I either agree with them or get information I need to make my own decision from the review. This is where I disagree with you. If someone is a big fan of products I dislike (such as music that I don't like), that's fine, if they share my appreciation of some other product area. But what's the point of reading someone who always disses what I like and raves about what I hate?
I keep my WOT fairly small, because I'm picky. I don't feel there's enough time in the day to read everything by anyone remotely interesting. Only the very best that I've come across are on my WOT.
Sure I'd love to be trusted by lots of people. But I'm not going to worry about it if it doesn't happen. I figure it's like worrying about being popular outside of electronic communities: you can learn to communicate better and to be more open to people, but popularity isn't worth agonizing over.

You have nothing to fear. We're usually refering to the ones with 200 people they trust, and only 2 trust them... that just looks fishy.
At first it will be lopsided, until folks get to know you..and know you will be sticking around. I hate adding someone new and then they disappear after 10 reviews...
I absolutely have you on alerts though..

Dear Doc,
Ah, its good to hear that its just a bookmark after all :-)
Actually, as a newbie I am tempted to add a ton of people because I like the writing of so and so, I like the humor of whats his face, I like the concise writing of whats her face, etc. and because by bookmarking them, I can really get a feel for this place. But..I am learning its not good to add too many because of how one might appear (wish it weren't so).
As I surf around Epinions, I am beginning to feel like some of you are my friends :-)

Tanu..
The absolute truth of it is that your WoT is just that: Yours. Do with it as you please. I used mine as a bookmark as you describe when I first joined too...
The only real caveat is trusting too many people too soon makes it look like an ulterior motive or someone who isn't really very particular... other than that, do as ya like with it and if anyone emails you and questions anything, then ignore them because that's just rude.. and some WILL do that. heh.

WOT the hell? (Reply to this comment)
by tanu
I am a flamingly new newbie, so its no surprise that I am making lots of mistakes. One of them was to add someone to my WOT before I even knew what the web of trust was. I thought it was like a bookmark, so I added this person because of one nice article she wrote. As I read more of her stuff, I realized I couldn't really relate to anything else, so I removed her. I HOPE she didn't notice. Sorry in advance to the nameless member who I shall not name!
I thought the WOT was pretty simple and straight forward (in my case, a book mark of all the people's articles I regularly read and would like to read - like a browser "favorite") - but the more I read the more I am beginning to realize its kinda complicated. I read MobiProf's articles, which I also thought were helpful, and this one, and I am thinking, What the hell? I'll never get it right!
It's too complicated. I just want to dive under a rock.
Love, Tanu
PS> I added you to my WOT just for the hellovit. :-P

I'm surprised it gets through epinions' temperamental profanity checker... some quite innocent words get highlighted in yellow... (but then I think they're maybe not so innocent in America?)
But I don't like bad language and will slap my wrists for being bad. Ow! See? I don't say things and not do them.
Pretty helpful? How did that happen?!?!? It wasn't deliberate, believe me!! ;-D

"Brumie" slang? Doc, if you're going to insult my typos, it would be better if you didn't do it using a typo of your own... :-P
Do I rate everything people on our WOT write? I try to, but I have to admit that sometimes the task is just beyond the time I have available. But I still try. (And I don't expect everyone on my WOT to rate everything I write... I'd have more ratings if I did, that's for sure!)
