Re: Fraudulent Billing, Calling rates vary, popups avoidable. (Reply to this comment)

Net2phone is great!!! Especially over a broadband connection.
Pop-ups suck! I recommend the Actiontec InternetPhoneWizard PCI card. This allows you to plug a standard analog (or cordless) phone into your PC. It comes with no-Ad software that works seamlessly with the net2phone service. I got the card on Ebay for $27 including shipping.

Net2Phone deposit expires! (Reply to this comment)
by nepalit
I have had problems with a slow ISP connection from Nepal and found Net2phone unusable... I was hoping for the ISP (Infocom) to upgrade but this has taken time... and I didn't realize that they were the problem. In the interim, my Net2phone deposit $25 (required by net2phone) has expired. Read the fine print in their agreement...
How many others has this happened to?
The remaining funds were about $22.
I call this "charging for non-service"... they even had the funds for 6 months without paying interest!

Fraudulent Billing, Calling rates vary, popups avoidable. (Reply to this comment)
by elvey
Indeed, the calling rates do vary: they don't give me the first 5 (or 2) minutes of my US-US PC-Phone calls free, even though that's what I am sure I signed up for. And trying to get that corrected has been utterly impossible. Trying to get in touch with them is nearly impossible too. They usually don't respond to email, and if they do, it's to ask you something that you answered in your original email. They don't put their phone # (1-877-N2PHONE (627-4663)) anywhere you can find it, and their reps constantly give out false and contradictory information every time I call, promise to correct overcharges and don't, promise to have supervisors call you and they don't, charge a monthly fee but advertise that there are no add'l fees, etc.
As for popup ads being a problem:
The only thing I can recommend is that if you've paid these
charlatans, you can at least get rid of the ads by using the version available at the tucows website. Adding certain
appropriate entries to your hosts file can also block the ads.

Very nice review! (Reply to this comment)

I'm totally tech-challenged, and fight it all I guess. Someday maybe I'll out net2phone or a comparable program. In the interim, I'll stick with what I know. Thanks for the review though!
