A Special Place In Our Society!!! (Reply to this comment)
by AinsleyJo
I've always thought that people with DS were very special angels and that they have a lot of untapped potential.
IMO, it's very realistic that you've established college savings funds for both of your sons, because chances are good that they'll both be going there!
Best Wishes!

You did an outstanding job in your editorial. I work with two adult men who also happen to have Down Syndrome. They are my very good friends. We need more myth busting.

and from your personal perspective too. I often only see a segment of the kids with this disability, due to the population that I teach (MR), and a lot of the kids I teach with both of these issues have a lot of same/similar characteristics/features, but each are unique too. (BTW, I teach 10 -14 year olds). We are noticing those who have had problems with the tongue (eating, talking, breathing) that have had surgery on their anoids/tonsils are doing much better now - without needing further surgeries.
I can certainly see where people may make some generalizations, I myself see some of what you mention with the tongue, etc. Thank for reminding us all to look at the individual :) Kimm

My daughter... (Reply to this comment)

goes to preschool with a good number of kids with Down Syndrome. I'm so glad that she's there with them because she's learning about the differences and similarities between various people in the world. Each child in her class has a "disability" but most important, they all have "ability" as well.
Thank you for a very informative essay!

I do hope that this will straighten out the misconceptions that many have regarding Down Syndrome. Thank you for writing this very educational piece.
My daughter has some delays, etc, due to her severe prematurity, and I get so very tired of having to explain why my daughter is so very tiny, why she is five and a half and still wearing diapers, and why, and why and why.....
She's my babygirl, and that's all that matters to me.

Hello there,
First of all Welcome to Epinions, and 2nd, I really appreciate this piece you wrote. You are such a great mom, and a well informed one. Why wouldn't you be? My son doesn't have Down Syndrome, he has something else. But it's parents like you that this world needs to hear more from. A mother or father that willingly, and lovingly stand up and speak out about their child's disability. I agree you have a child. He is your gift. I'm just so touched by your writing. Thank you for sharing!
God Bless ~

has a DS brother with a solid job and a pretty independent life - he gets fed up with the image that strangers have of him and isn't afraid to say so!
A great positive review - thanks for sharing
