Thanks for the comment. I do agree completely that the 9800 Pro is the way to go over the other two choices you mention. The performance of this card is superior, and it does contain the 8 rendering pipelines and 256-bit memory as opposed to 4 pipelines and 128-bit on the other two cards. I am looking forward to giving my card a workout when it arrives!
Once again, Thanks...

A well-written, insightful review. (Reply to this comment)

Based on your review, I've made the right choice three months ago by opting for a Radeon 9800 Pro rather than a GeForce FX 5700 Ultra or a Radeon 9600XT (though at that time, Radeon 9800 Pros went for $300 while GeForce FX 5700 Ultras and Radeon 9600XT's went for about $200). I simply felt that the improved performance that the 9800 Pro delivers over the 5700 Ultra and the 9600XT was well worth the extra $100.
That said, only the die-hard fanatics should pony up much more than $300 for a graphics card - ever.

Thanks for the rating and comment! I honestly don't understand the need for buying the biggest, baddest card on the market after understanding the FPS and human perception. I also feel the desire to have the best out there, and would pay a small premium for it, but not over double the price to $400-$500. Glad this is helping some folks and reinforcing others' beliefs...

I am getting a 9800 Pro for my new box I am building currently. Which manufacturer's board did you go with? You can get them for $210-$225 retail boxed now. Have you seen the reviews for the new 6800Ultra on HardOCP.com? Bad board... Thanks for the rating and comment!

My dream computer would cost me about $2000 just for the box. I would never go to that extreme, as I do not think it is a big benefit over what I already have, but you could easily spend this much! (and that is without a water cooling system) Thanks for the rating and comment!

Excellent primer (Reply to this comment)

This was a great introduction into some of the meat of buying a graphics card. I had to learn most of this on my own the hard way - where was this review 2 months ago?
Seriously, very well done.

I went thru the same thing deciding if I should pay $500 for the 9800 XT 256 MB or the $300 9800 Pro 128 MB. In the end, the Pro performs the same in my games (esp. when OCed), and the extra memory was not missed. That shaved off a hefty $200!

I really thought ..... (Reply to this comment)

the corvette line was witty. Tell me, if someone spends $400.00 on a Graphics card, what do you think that person spent on his pc?
:-o
great review. Packed with more info than I know what to deal with. BUT, at least I would look smart when I faced a salesman.
