The enduring imagery of this film is exactly.. (Reply to this comment)

...what you pegged in this review -- the grimness and lack of glamor associated with heroic anonymity in resistance to tyranny. As anti-Hollywood as it gets.
Growing up in France as a pre-teen and young teen in the late 50s to mid 60s, I was a big fan of Lino Ventura who was a staple of B movies as a gangster or tough guy with his gruff face and broken nose looks. Good to see him step up here in a role with some more substance.

The title of the other film, WHERE EAGLES DARE, might have translated well in Italian or Spanish!
I always have a poignant moment when I think of that film because my late son was shown the film when he was in school on Isle of Jersey. My reaction to it was much like your own. One often wishes one could retract a thoughtless remark, years later, when it is too late.
ARMY OF SHADOWS is still on my list to be seen.
Regards.

My husband would really enjoy this movie so as soon as I finish linking this review I'm going to add it to my queue...I was just thinking yesterday that it was time I review a good French film for the w/o...and here you are.
Many thanks once again
You are the best!
