I purchased this product based on the recommendation of Calphalon for cleaning their stainless steel cookware. As to why I had to purchase it...
THE PROMISE: Removes stubborn stains, including lime, from stainless steel, fiberglass, porcelain, marble, stovetops, countertops, tile, tubs, toilets, and a whole lot more, restoring it to its intended beauty without scratching the surface.
THE STORY: My son, who was living at home at the time, decided to make himself breakfast. He is 26 years old and not new to fending for himself in the kitchen. I don't remember how long a period of time had passed, possibly a week, when I pulled my large skillet out of the cupboard and noticed a VERY BURNT mark on the skillet. It was easily five inches in circumference.
I just about freaked out. The skillet was only a few months old, and it looked like the type of stain that would be very difficult to remove. It wasn't a crusty type of burn, but rather, it appeared to be burned right into the finish of the skillet. It was as if the burn and the skillet were one. When I asked him about it, he said he did it when he put butter in the skillet and let the butter get too hot.
I tried my typical solution: hot soapy water and a scrubby pad. If I'm not mistaken, I'm sure I even put a Brillo pad to it (YIKES, I hate using brillo pads). But this was to no avail. I could tell this was going to be one difficult job. I HAD TO GET THIS SKILLET BACK TO ITS ORIGINAL BEAUTY!!! IT WAS STILL NEW!!!
SOLUTION: Off I went to my local Bed Bath & Beyond to locate either Bon Ami or Bar Keepers Friend, because that was what Calphalon recommended. I purchased the latter and brought it home. I tried it. Did it work? NO!!! But, did I give up? NO!!! I tried again. Did it work the second time? NO!!! But, I still did not give up. I must have spent a good three days getting the stain out of this skillet. I would follow the instructions but nothing would happen. I even boo-hooed to one of my friends, and told her I was going to make my son buy me a new skillet.
Eventually, I just poured the solution on practically full strength and let it sit for an hour. NOTE: I did not follow the instructions on the bottle at this time. I figured, what the heck, either it comes out or it doesn't. I was ready to pitch it by this time. But, lo and behold, when I came back to the skillet and tried to get the stain out, IT CAME OUT!!!
BOTTOM LINE: I don't know if the stain would have come out if I had continued to follow the instructions on the bottle, because, as I said earlier, the stain seemed to be fused right into the metal. But, using it practically full-strength with just a 'tad' of water made all the difference in the world.
I have continued to use this product for light staining on my skillets and it cleans as promised, without all the aforementioned difficulty.
I think I expected an instantaneous cleanser, though. I should know better.
