Transformers 2007 directed by Michael Bay is a film based upon its 80's cartoon series and franchise. Executive producer Steven Spielberg keeps things fairly simple with its characters, plot and theme. Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) and Mikaela Banes (Megan Fox) are two high school kids who become involved in an age old war between the revolting Decepticon's and valiant Autobot's. Sams grandfather Captain Archibald Witwicky was an explorer who accidentally discovered Megatron whose navigational system made an imprint on his eye glasses detailing the location of the Allspark. The United States government (Sector 7) has Megatron on ice and has been toying around with the Allspark cube's technology and power. Sam's dad takes him out to purchase his first car and he ends up buying an Autobot named Bumblebee who helps him get a date with high school cutie Mikaela. The film eventually becomes a coming of age story for Sam as he discovers Bumblebee mission on earth. The earth's fate now rest in the hands of Sam, Mikaela and the Autobot's as they try and keep the all power Allspark out of the hands of Megatron and his evil Decepticons.
The theatrical cast contributions ranged from good to excellent. Megan Fox, Tyrese Gibson, Jon Voight and Bernie Mac were in their element. Although Shia LaBeouf would not have been my pick for the lead role, I enjoyed his talents. Hugo Wallace Weaving and Canadian voice actor Peter Cullenof delivered the right tones and inflections for their characters and the live action interpretations of the robotic characters was on point. Much to my amazement the classic 1986 line from the original animated Transformers, "One Shall Stand...One Shall Fall!" is actually in the movie. While there are many interesting characters both human and machine none are more likable, than the controlled and reassuring Optimus Prime.
There is a lot going on in this film including the awesome CGI which morphs the robots to life. The premise of good versus evil is alive and well. Humor and sensitivity is sprinkled through out the film adding lots of substance and meaning to the fight scenes. Parents should be cautious with this one as it carries a well deserved PG-13 rating. Not only are their intense sequences but their an assumption that some people die and while it is all sci-fi action there are several scenes that my bit to harsh for little ones. Product placement is all over this film like flies at a picnic thanks to General Motor's Chevys, Pontiacs, Hummers, and Cadillacs.
Celebrating Independence Day with my family and the highly anticipated box office behemoth was a marvelous treat. Transformers is an entertaining movie that taps into the authenticity of the TV cartoon and at the same time steps up to 20th century expectations with dazzling cinematography and theatrical legitimacy. If the numerous TV and Internet trailers don't pull you into the theater perhaps the toy merchandising at the local department store or a magazine will put this on your "to do" list. In fact, Maxim Magazine July 2007 issue shares an excellent article about the film's lovely leading costar Megan Fox and a free poster to boot, featuring Autobot's Ironhid, Bumblebee, Jazz and Rachet behind GM vehicles. Bottom line, it's and experience worth the full ticket price. In fact, Transformers is probably going to be the hottest summer movie ever. Naturally serious movie goers and critics will take some well deserved pot shots at the story line, but nostalgic fans like me will not only wear the Autobot logo T-Shirts, we will purchase toys for our kids and the DVD once it hits the shelves. I can only hope and dream there will be a sequel.
I could go on, but I won't it would not be fair, you simply have to go see the movie.
