The bottom line is that interviewing can be a comical insight into candidates...

Great review! Informative and oh-so-entertaining. The part that had me laughing for the longest time was the candidate who refused to answer the question and said "Pass." Oh man! If only life were that easy, eh?

Thanks for the rating and comment!

I hope that some of the answers helped you prepare, and would be interested to hear how the interview went, if you are willing to say... Although losing the employee discount on hardware and software that you have at your present job will suck!

At my previous employer we stopped sending the HR specialists on first interviews and started sending the production area managers and engineers. We felt that we were spending a lot of money on the interview trips where someone was able to BS the HR person, and therefore spent that money training the front line folks to interview within legal bounds. Also, the HR folks focused on grades and not necessarily the people skills that make the candidate successful, which also wasted a lot of time trying to argue why the person was not the right fit for the job. In other words, paper qualifications were not the right skills to succeed in the production environment!

THanks for the comment and rating!

Thanks for the comment and rating! I was not too sure if this would be viewed as on topic, as a lot of this is geared towards internal interviews that are not necessarily slated towards the college graduate, as the topic appears to be slanted towards. However, I enjoyed the answers I recieved, and therefore thought it would be a good read sprinkled with some useful information for interviewee's!

Once again, thanks!

I know what you mean about that question. I usually answer this with an explanation of my high personal standards, and then talk about how I have learned to tone down my standards in regards to people who work for me. I then can discuss how I tailor work expectations to the person and their skills as opposed to my skills, and this is generally seen as a positive, as well as something that I have learned to overcome. I learned that no one wants to work for a perfectionist, and expecting your employees to be able to do everything you can do is unreasonable. Besides, they may then expect you to be able to do everything they can do!

Thanks for the comment and rating!

very helpful :O) I Am actually on the interviewing committee for my district, and I STILL get nervous when I have to interview for something! :)

I hate, hate, hate the "tell me a weakness" question - I don't really see what there is to gain from asking it - no one in their right mind is going to tell you their faults - many of us have been taught to say something about our heard word, dedication, etc - something that can be seen as a positive :)

I do quite a bit of interviewing where I work as well. I'm a software engineer, so after the person makes it past the HR screening and is deemed fit for interviewing, a couple of us are brought in to determine a potential hire's true skill level. He's got to get by us before he gets to upper management -- we call ourselves the "poser exposers".

We've had some great answers to the "Why do you want to work here?" question. A few years ago we got a lot of, "Because of my Visa -- I will be deported if I cannot find work." While these are sad and really pull at my heart strings, it isn't a good response to the question (I guess they should get points for honesty).

We get tons of people claiming to have lots of experience and certifications who cannot answer the simplest of technical questions, or who can quote books but cannot apply those skills to a simple practical question. It makes me wonder how others expose posers in non-technical environments.

Great review!

I am about to be interviewed this coming friday at UPS for a helpdesk position, and your review came at a perfect time! Thanks for the insight, as I think this would give me a real good heads up at some of the answers I must give more thought to.

Great piece! I would give it a "most helpful" if I could!

Thanks for the rating and comment! When I graduated college, I never thought about it from the perspective of the interviewer, either. Now after sitting through several of them, I would be interested to read the notes my first employer's interviewer had!

Once again, thanks!

This was such an entertaining and informative review. There's nothing more intimidatng than an interview when you REALLY want the job. I've never thought about it from the perspective of the person asking all the questions :)

Sounds like someone who really did their research! I wish we had someone like you to interview... It would be nice to hear more questions than "How much vacation do I get?" or "How fast can I move up?". Those are important questions, but wait until the second interview!

Thanks for the rating and comment!

Any questions?

I once asked an interviewer why their stocks had been slipping alarmingly fast lately... and would she tell ME why I should feel confident that this trend would be turning around.

She did... and I got the job.

Doc, who always liked turning interviews on their ears.

It is truly amazing the answers that some folks think are good answers in an interview. Maybe he thought that showed his ability to take charge and that he was not afraid of authority... I am not too sure, but it was a bad line of reasoning, either way. Needless to say, we didn't hire him... On the plus side, neither of us laughed outright during the interview process!

Thanks for the rating and the comment; I really appreciate it!

Thanks for the comment and rating, mimi. I know I enjoyed very much sitting across from these folks in the interview process, except for trying to keep a straight face a few times! Sorry to hear you are gloomy and rainy... We had a wonderful, sunny and warm day in Montana!

Once again, thanks,

Question: Give me an example of a time when conflict arose in a team environment and how you particularly handled it.

Answer: I had a disagreement with my manager where he was asking unreasonable things of me. He was a jerk about it, and I finally told him to lay off of me or I would meet him outside of work some night.

Oh, come on, that's acceptable! LOL...yeah, right! Man, I bet you get some real winners, huh?

Very enjoyable read,
