Oops, thanks for that! (For some reason, in my memory it was ole' Ollie!) I've corrected it now and of course given you a mention :-D
Still disagree on Police Academy 4 though - I thought that was a bit weak. Still, as you say, not exactly worth arguing much about!

If I can be nitpicky for a sec... (Reply to this comment)
by truckturner
The great Tim Curry plays the butler in "Clue", not Ollie Reed, I'm afraid. And I'd argue that "Police Academy 4" (or as co-star David Spade calls it 'the good one') is the only one worth watching, Bobcat's even better in that than in the third one. Not that i'd argue the point too strongly...

Hey Dave,
So true about Airplane.
You should go right out and rent Dr Strangelove, take the phone off the hook and enjoy.

Mars Attacks was great. Hmm. Casino Royale a Bond spoof. Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid Bogie spoof. Peter Sellers is excellent, Danny Kaye...

Um... do I really have to answer this question?
I have to be honest, I haven't seen either - but neither film particularly appeals to me, so I probably never will...

I actually still have to see "Young Frankenstein" and "Top Secret", will definitely do so though as they seem to have made it onto a lot of people's top ten lists.

Ah, Chris, you found me out... yeah, I know that technically theyr're not spoofs, but I just didn't have the heart to leave them out! Tell you what - when (if) I do a "Top Ten Comedies" list, I'll move them over there (though they'll probably only be honourable mentions)..
And you said: "And High Anxiety is a spoof of dozens of Hitch movies thrown together Vertigo, Psycho, The Birds, North by Northwest etc." - true enough, though what I actually said was:
"a spoof of Hitchcock films", I just didn't say which ones other than vertigo! :-P
"Most folks aren't going to care about the mis-information or wild guesses and your everything but the kitchen sink style is frantic, chaotic, energetic and fun." - um... I thnk that was a compliment?!?! If so, thanks!
Wasn't too keen on "Shot in the Dark" myself, but it was quite fun I guess. Apart from that one, I can never remember which PP film had which plot!
Thanks for the comments (and sorry about the kitchen sink...)

Thanks for the list it was really neat and brought back some cool memories of Movies I have not seen in a good while. My favorite on the list is "Blazing Saddles". The eating Beans around the campfire and the sound effects were maybe the funniest part of the Movie.

*grin* I kinda liked UHF myself. It has some funny skits but not much besides those but they were funny. I saw it relatively recently even because a friend of mine rented it for a big splurge for his bachelor party. Yeah pretty tame but...
I wouldn't really call it a spoof either though...

Re: Re: The Dish (Reply to this comment)

:D To be fair Sam Neill gets no respect and has a pretty oddball career for how well known he could be. While his JP costar Jeff Goldblum has an oddball career too, a regular moviegoer can at least name a couple of films in addition to JP that he has been in (Independance Day...). In case you didn't notice, neither of the films I mentioned were precisely mainstream. Though I remember briefly debating with a girl whether to see Event Horizon or Air Force One in the theater I can't remember seeing ads for In the Mouth of Madness up.
*grin* I would agree that The Dish is one of the better films I have seen but I have seen a few films somewhat similar in tone bouncing around...
Personally I like Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein best of his spoofs but think you have a pretty decent list. Most of them are stuff that I have liked watching with buddies and laughing a lot. I remember watching The Naked Gun and... Well... Top Secret with some friends and having lots of fun watching them. I can't say TS is one of the best but it is of the same sort of tone as TNG and the Airplane flicks.
Do y'all call the game "Cluedo" over in England? We call it "Clue" over here:p
Loved Shanghai Noon myself... Checked it out from the library and enjoyed it just as much the second time through.

Not all are spoofs (Reply to this comment)
by ChrisJarmick
Your enthusiasm is catching but your lack of research trips you up several times.
You also have two films that are clearly not spoofs:
The Dish
and
Cool Runnings
And High Anxiety is a spoof of dozens of Hitch movies thrown together Vertigo, Psycho, The Birds, North by Northwest etc.
Most folks aren't going to care about the mis-information or wild guesses and your everything but the kitchen sink style is frantic, chaotic, energetic and fun.
The best Pink Panther movie is Shot in the Dark.
Pink Panther and Return of the Pink Panther are both pretty good as well.

Hmm....
Ander, I might have known you'd take up this point! (Forgot about it being Sam Neill in that film to be quite honest!) I pretty much agree with you, which is why I said from the start that I was using a very relaxed approach to what constituted a "sppof". But think about it - how many other similar films have you seen that are as light-hearted as The Dish? They're all as serious as hell normally...
Anyway, I'm keeping it in 'cos I like it - but I do take your point! :-P :-P

Not only is this a great list of some of the best 'spoofs' out there, it jogged my memory. Now I know what I'll be doing this weekend - trying to track down a few of theses classics (as well as a couple I haven't yet seen).
Thanks a bunch!

Naked Gun 33 1/3 (Reply to this comment)
by pduval69
Speaking of that pre-credits sequence, I studied it in a multimedia class I took in college. Both that scene and the staircase gunfight scene with the baby carriage in The Untouchables were inspired by a Russian film called Battleship Potemkin from 1925, which was the first ever motion picture that involved editing and multi-camera shots of the same scene, known as the "Odessa Steps" sequence.
Great write-up, all these films are more than worthy viewing. I'm just glad you omitted Weird Al Yankovic's UHF from the list.

the second Airport movie that Airplane! is based on. I couldn't believe it when I watched it last year or the year before how little they actually had to change in the script from one movie to the other to make Airplane!.
