I keep kosher and to get quality meat I usually schlep about 30 minutes into Brooklyn. I don't mind the trip because my wife and I like to pick and choose what we get and we do other things when we go there. However, we were in need of restocking our freezer (yes, we have an extra freezer for when we stock up - we grill a lot) and our car was out of commission - basically, when that happens in the suburbs, you're stuck.
A friend of mine recommended a website called glattondemand.com - so we looked at it and the pricing was pretty good. That's certainly the first thing we looked for before we tried it out. Kosher meat in general is a more expensive then non-kosher meat. It's a pretty simply designed website, which I kind of like. I was able to find what I wanted and there was a good range of products from chicken wings to brisket and ground beef. So now we can grill again.
The cost of shipping adds to the overall cost - it's 30 dollars per box and each box has room for 24 trays of product. I understand that there must be a cost because they have to ship it frozen and it arrived by me frozen solid. To me, this is money worth spending if you're in a bind and getting a good quantity of meat, but also worth spending if you have to go far for a good supply of kosher meat. I know people who have to travel an hour each way to stock up because their local supply is on the lower side and the pricing of the meat where they go is more expensive then on this website.
Clearly, I wouldn't use the website to ship a couple of items, that would be a bit silly.
They use Google Checkout for their credit-card processing and the steps were pretty easy (isn't Google easy with everything?). The one downside was that the meat took some time to get to me, about a week, but beggars can't be choosers and I was still a few days away from being in desperate need of meat i.e. on the verge of cannibalism.
Throughout this process, I was impressed by a couple things: the pricing is pretty competitive and the FAQ was helpful and answered most of my questions. I did call them about something I was curious about and they were very helpful to me. They also donate 1.8 % of your order to a organization of your choosing in your community. I was most impressed by the actual quality of the meat once I got it. The wings were excellent and there were no feathers on it and the steaks we got from there were very nice on my grill.
Overall, I'd recommend this online store to anyone who has a need for kosher meat to be delivered. There are a lot of people that keep kosher that don't live as close to a place like Brooklyn where it's easy to find good, low priced meat.
It's an easy site to navigate, with a simple ordering process with good customer service and, most importantly, good meat - hopefully, the niche market it serves supports it.
