Is New York really like this?

Pros:Wonderful atmosphere at the casino level
Cons:Bare minimum in the rooms
The Bottom Line: Come to Vegas to gamble and see the sights of the Strip. None of those things are available in your hotel room!
Never having been to the actual New York City I had to take the next best thing. The New York New York Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas has all the glitz and glamour one could hope for when staying in Las Vegas. New York New York was the hotel I stayed in on my first trip to Las Vegas. Like many other of the big casino/hotels on the strip the New York New York caters to big money high stakes players. All the tables have high minimums ($5 being high for this lowly opinionist). But the lengths they have gone to to re-create a city is remarkable. From the a sports themed resteraunt named after the long gone Polo Grounds to the steam coming from the manhole covers it looks and feels like a real city. And accurate or not it's an experience just to see it.
The problem I found was in the small things I expect when paying for a hotel room. In room coffee, hair dryers that work and the ability to sleep at least somewhat were all compromised at the New York New York. For starters the room was as bare minimum as a hotel room could get. It was clean and tidy but just seemed to lack any charm for the price i paid. Second, the Cony Island roller coaster runs till all hours of the night. and since I was in the back of the hotel all I could hear was the "clack-clack-clack" of the roller coaster every 20 minutes or so as it climbed to it's peak.
Actual room aside though, my stay was a pleasant one. New York New York is adjacent to the MGM and Excalibur which has a monorail you can hop to almost any major hotel on The Strip. The staff was courteous and helpful and the check in/out process was a breeze although I was there at an off-peak time.
Overall I recommend the New York New York. Just don't expect to be pampered with freebees. They want you in the casino.
