The Bottom Line Watch these for sword swinging fun!
I think everyone enjoys a good medieval period movie. The classic damsel in distress, or the brave knight slaying the dragon, or even the played out plot of a hobbit attempting to destroy a ring of power. Whatever your taste, I've compiled 10 movies that you're sure to love!
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves - This is easily the best version of the Robin Hood story. Kevin Costner does a great job, so does Morgan Freeman. The characters are believable and interesting. The storyline is engaging and exciting. It's the classic tale of stealing from the rich to give to the poor, you'll love it!
The First Knight - Yet another story of King Arthur and Lady Guinevere. Guinevere is torn between her feelings for King Arthur and Sir Lancelot. The battle scenes are pretty good and there's a good deal of character development. I think the actors all did a great job. It's a story worth watching.
Braveheart - A classic - an epic. This is a superb movie in classic Gibson style - passion, action, and gore! The story follows William Wallace from childhood to death as he fights to free his country from the tyranny of the English. Wallace is pushed over the edge by the slaying of his wife by an Englishman. It's a great story of love, patriotism, and justice. A must see!
Excalibur - Excalibur is the story of King Arthur, the Knights of the Round Table, Guenevere, and Merlin. The legendary sword is passed from Merlin to King Arthur. It's a great movie, despite being made in the early 1980's. The cast is great and star Nigel Terry, Liam Neesen, Helen Mirren and more.
Gladiator - If you like Braveheart you will also like Gladiator. General Maximus (Russell Crowe) is the pride of Rome. Ceasar, nearing his death, wants Maximus to take over as ruler of the Roman Empire. Ceasar's son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) is very distressed when his father tells him that Maximus will take over as ruler of the empire. Commodus murders his father and assumes the throne. Maximus is imprisoned and sentenced to death, but escapes. He's eventually taken captive and trained as a gladiator. Watch the movie to learn more about the story! It's an amazing movie with stunning computer graphics, an amazing cast, and great storyline!
Conan The Barbarian - Conan is the film that made "The Governator" a big star. James Earl Jones plays Thulsa Doom, an evil man that eventually dies at the hands of the great Conan! It's a slightly cheesy movie, but good nonetheless. Arnold fits the role of Conan perfectly. This is almost a "classic."
Shrek - Shrek? Yeah, I think this is a great medieval movie. The grumpy but friendly green ogre and his talking donkey sidekick make for a fun and hilarious duo. They save the damsel in distress from a dragon and deliver her to Lord Farquaad. But surprisingly, Princess is not what she appears to be...
Timeline - I was actually fairly surprised at how much I liked this movie. It's an interesting sci-fi movie with much of the story set in the medieval time period. Timeline is based on the Michael Crichton book of the same title. Time travel has been discovered by a small technology company out in the desert. Paul Walker and Francis O'Conner star in this fun movie.
Willow - George Lucas, Lucasfilm, brings us the adventerous story of Willow (Warwick Davis) and Madmartigan (Val Kilmer) as they try to save a princess (who's an infant) from an evil queen. Willow has lots of battle scenes and decent special effects. One of the funniest parts is when Madmartigan gets hit with faerie dust and falls in love with Sorsha, the evil queen's daughter. He starts saying things like, "I love you Sorsha, I worship you Sorsha." It's pretty funny! Younger kids might be scared by the monsters in the movie, or when everyone gets turned into pigs by the evil queen, but other than that it's pretty much a family movie.
Lord of the Rings Trilogy - If you're among the fifteen people in the world that haven't seen any of the Lord of the Rings movies then you need to shake off your "loser" status and check them out! LOTR is not your traditional knight in shining armor movie...it's much better! Well, what can't I say about this trilogy?! The cinematography is great, acting is top notch, the graphics are amazing and the storyline is superb! For those that don't know it's about a powerful ring that corrupts its wearer. Fortunately, hobbits seem to be resistant to it's evil nature. Frodo Baggins ends up with the ring and is charged with the task of transporting the ring to the fires of Mt. Doom. Friends help Frodo and Sam on their journey and include Gandalf, Legolas, Boromir, Pippin, Merry, Aragorn, and Gimli. It's a long journey and some of the friends are lost along the way, but many more are made. It's as much a story about good defeating evil as it is about friendship conquering difficulty.
