| BeastieGirl's Full Review: Transformers |
It seems like everyone but me has at one time or another been totally into the Transformers. As a kid growing up in the 80s, I definitely remember them, but I dont think I ever cared for them much. I liked the toys a bit and the cartoon even less, so when my husband and his friends started getting really excited about the pending release of Michael Bays new movie, Transformers, I realized it must have just been a guy thing. When other women I knew started talking about it just as much, I started to suspect that there may be more to this whole Transformer thing than meets the eye.
The Plot, In General
Before seeing the movie Transformers, I remembered very little about them, except that they were cars that would transform into robots. How they expected to make a movie about them was beyond me. But they did. Apparently, the story goes something like this:
Robots from another planet have come to Earth in search of an object called an All-Spark, which would provide ultimate power to whoever held possession of it. Every dramatic story has to have a good side and an evil side. Here, we have the Autobots (to Protect) and Decepticons (to Destroy). The Autobots, led by Optimus Prime (an 18-wheel Mack truck Transformer), want to keep the All-Spark away from the evil Decepticons, who plan on using it to destroy Earth and all of mankind. Thus, the battle ensues between good and evil, a perfectly good action packed, full-scale, alien robot war.
I Love Shia LeBeouf
What could possibly have interested me enough to go see Transformers? Besides my husband constantly talking about it and showing me all the cars from his Maxim magazine, I really wanted to see for myself if it was indeed worth all the fuss and buzz that it has been generating. A movie about alien robots who transform into cars had to have a bit more about it than that to have the record for highest grossing movie opening ever. I was pleasantly surprised. Along with the alien robots, there were some pretty good characters (human) involved in Transformers. The main character, an unknown hero, Sam Witwicky (Shia LeBeouf), is a nerdy high school junior who finds himself in the middle of this whole disaster. He is funny, smart, witty and an overall very likeable character. He and his parents brought a very human aspect to the movie. Other famous faces include Jon Voight, Josh Duhamel (hes so sexy), John Turturro (a personal favorite actor of mine) and Bernie Mac, with a small, but funny role.
Robots with a sense of humor?
Well, the robots themselves werent all that funny, but as a whole, I thought Transformers was pretty funny. Considering the Transformers were battling over the possible extinction of human life, it was a rocking comedy. I dare say I laughed more than anything else during this movie. There were a few edge of your seat moments, but overall, I felt like the ending was fairly predictable- it was the ride along the way that was a good time. The music was loud, the special effects were amazing (we saw it in digital, which apparently is way better), and the acting was actually really good too.
Final Recommendations
There was little sexuality or profanities used in Transformers, although Meagan Fox (the love interest for our hero Sam) was scantily dressed, there was nothing more than a couple of close moments. Violence was pretty heavy- as you might imagine a war between alien robots might be a little much for young children, hence the PG-13 rating, which seemed fairly appropriate to me. The music was loud, the scenes were fast and if you blinked you could have missed something, even though the overall plot was pretty easy to follow. I do have to admit that I enjoyed myself and even though I still dont get the whole big deal about Transformers in general, the movie lived up to the hype and I suppose it was worth it to see it on the big screen (but I am glad we paid matinee prices!).
