"It's dangerous to dream"
"Streets too loud to ever hear freedom ring"
"Why did one straw break the camel's back? Here's the secret: the million other straws underneath it - it's all mathematics" (a metaphor for the pressures of modern life on the common man).
AND THAT IS JUST FROM ONE SONG! (Mos Def - Mathematics).
"Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everybody" - KRS-ONE- MCs Act Like They Don't Know.
"There can never really be justice on stolen land" - KRS-ONE - Rappaz R N Dainja
A fellow educated introspective hip-hop head salutes you. Good job.

Just awesome.

Public Enemy as a group is racist to Jews not just proffesor griff, Gays and probably whites to. Here are some quotes from http://www.robertchristgau.com/xg/music/pe-law.php
"There's no place for gays. When God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, it was for that sort of behaviour"
"If the Palestinians took up arms, went into Israel and killed all the Jews, it'd be alright"
Chuck D, who first asserted, "I back Griff. Whatever he says, he can prove,"
"I think that's why they call it `jewelry,' because the Jews in South Africa, they run that thing"--and Griff was off to the races.
(Griff)dared Jews to send "their f*ggot little hit men" after him, raved about how "the Jews finance these experiments on AIDS with black people in South Africa,"

Nice (Reply to this comment)
by spit_bsm
I really liked the quotes. Especially "The World Is Yours" because I love that song. I also like the Mos Def one. One I think should be in their, my favorite quote, is "People fear what they don't understand, hate what they can't conquer" - Nas, Hate Me Now
This quote appeals to me whenever I wonder why people are racist, and how come people diss religon and do the things they do. It's because they fear what they don't understand. Also, why do a lot of people hate the police, America, yourself... It's because they can't beat you and they're jealous. Even though it kinda hurts to say you can't beat the police haha. Nice job though, I really liked all the quotes

Late comment... (Reply to this comment)

...but I just have to correct you on two things. Number one, Chuck D was not the one who made anti-Jewish comments. That was another member of Public Enemy named Professor Griff. He never rapped and I don't really know what his purpose in the group was, but in any case I'm sure you'll be glad to know that it wasn't Chuck. Second, I noticed in your "South Bronx" quote explanation, you mentioned that everyone thought hip-hop started in Queensbridge. Actually, that's not true at all. Most people always knew hip-hop was started in the Bronx. That song was actually directed as a diss to Queens rapper MC Shan who made a song called "The Bridge". KRS and Scott LaRock heard the song and thought Shan was claiming hip-hop was invented in Queensbridge, so they recorded "South Bronx" and "The Bridge Is Over" as diss tracks to Shan. Just some information I thought you might like to know. But anyway, nice choices for the quotes and nice write-up in general.

i have to recommend a line:
" Life's a Bitch but God-forbid the bitch divorce me" - Nas, Affirmative Action
the song wasnt that memorable, but i just love the line. first he references himslef, and then expands the metaphor of life to a bitch by saying "God-forbid the bitch divorce me". It means that life is hard, but even then, the last thing we want is to die and be taken away from life.
also, i give you props for not going overboard with punchline rappers, posting 10 big l lines, 10 canibus lines, etc. but where's chino xl? he drops a quotable per minute, and i think at least one line should be included. good writing tho.

Nas:
"I get upset 'cause I just want to be treated the way you are, like a star, not a worry in the world thus far,
But Wait a minute, we both need ya mother's attention, I must be crazy, jealous of my own baby infant."
Nas reveals so much of human nature with this line. Anyone would want that attention, and he proves to me that he's still a human, no matter how much media attention he recieves. Because by the end of the day, the things close at heart matter the most. Not only that, but he comes so close at home with the mentioning of his child. This is excellence.

theillest is right,
"since it became a lucrative misconception that movement in any direction is progression"
-Canibus, Poet Laureate II
This line is so intelligent. Progresion means going forward. Canibus is saying that nowadays rappers see progression as going in any direction.
another great Canibus line is
"and please dont talk about guns,
only "nine" you have is a 5 dollar bill and 4 ones"

I dunno what website you downloaded it from, but those two characters are "Lao Tzu"... the guy who founded Taoism. It can also mean daddy (with the connotation of being the head of a family or group).
I don't think it means warrior, but then again my Chinese ain't perfect.

Actually my background means "warrior". I downloaded it from this website and it said what it means. It's all in the preparation for my Kill Bill week after my exams. Thanks for the advice anyway and a quote machine!? Yay, I like that! :-)

Some thoughts (Reply to this comment)
by youngchinq
Obviously a great list, and obviously you could have made it a hundred times longer if you wated and had the time because you're like a hip-hop quote machine :) So, it's pointless to say you forgot anything, but my favourite Nas quote would be:
"I set it off with my own rhyme / Cause I'm as ill as a convict who kills for phone time."
Respects for that Aesop Rock quote, who I think is simply genius all the time. If I can't understand him, it's because he's being too much of a genius :)
Your Tao background: for someone concerned with sexism, you know that yin-yang crap is based primarily on sexist ideas, right?
Good luck on your exams!

Very nice (Reply to this comment)
by snoogans86
I enjoyed this a great deal. You're right then you can never write a list like this and satisfy everyone (everyone's got certain quotes in their head that you may have forgotten) but here's a few of my favorites.
"Yo, whoever grabs the mic after me'll get booed
Get everything in the bar thrown at you and your crew
From moet bottles to barstools, fruits and food
You got an album out you get hit with your CD too" - Canibus, Buckingham Palace (candidate for illest song ever)
"I wear short sleeves like I bear arms" - Jay-Z, Brooklyn's Finest (I don't like Jay-Z much either, but that quote just hit me today while listening to Reasonable Doubt, I love punchlines)
"After 12, I'm worse than a gremlin
Give me the microphone and I start tremblin'" - Rakim, Microphone Fiend (quite possibly the dopest emcee ever, on my favorite song by him, ever)
"My metaphor content will split you into little
Powder-like crystals so I can sniff you" - Canibus, How We Roll (another dope Canibus punchline)
"Im like Moses with a staff that parts the Red Sea
But its a new day so I use the mic to depart emcees Vast Aire, Real Earth (Cannibal Ox is dope and Vast had mad punchlines)
I know your quotes were more introspective and truthful, but Im a punchline fiend. Punchlines are what stick out in my head more. Ive got plenty more where those came from, but Im gonna hold off for now. Keep up the great reviews and articles.

What do you think of mine?
God among MCs, I'm the cosmic defender/ More passionate than feminists with a radical gender agenda/ You dream at the pace of a racehorse/ I dream at the pace of a Ferrari with nitrous oxide in the exhaust/... - Imagination Process
Use lightning strikes to represent my punchlines/ Rain is my music and the thunder is my bassline/ rhymes express everything from joy to rage/ a million storms a minute so all the world's my stage/... - Thunder God
What's the matter back there? You're looking a bit forlorn/ Is it cos your live show's so bad you need Viagra to perform?? I love hip-hop I got fire for the art/ Yet you're so blinded, you couldn't find it in the dark/ And you not D-E-F, you're just Def, you can't hear me/ You can't see me, feel me or even try to get near me/ Enjoying my reputation in front of these scared cats/ As the only white kid in CJs who doesn't get stared at/ Rear back and strike with rhymes so venemous/ That they give you pain twenty times worse than twenty enemas/... - Move
(CJs is a 'black' club in Grahamstown)
How'd I measure up? Lol :-) Hope you enjoyed them! Tight review. peace
