The Bottom Line Hollywood, PLEASE go back to making good monster movies. Learn from your past, grasshopper.
1. "Alien" - We had never seen anything like it before. The creature concept was flawless and scared us in a way we had never experienced before. Ridley Scott really did an excellent job. The direction, acting and special effects are all top of the line. They successfully suspended my disbelief. This movie also ranks as my choice for best Sci-fi film. 2. "Predator" - Again, we had never seen anything like it before, and, again, the creature concept was flawless and absolutely amazing. Although billed as an action movie, this one still ranks high on the 'monster' scale due to the awesome creation and presentation of the creature. 3. "Aliens" - Although a sequel, this movie sucessfully stands on its own. It not only took the alien concept to the next level (by making an army of them), it also introduced us to a new creature, the Queen. An excellent and worthy follow up to its predecessor. 4. "The Thing" (remake)- Possibly the most bizarre of creatures. It apparently has no shape of its own, but acts like a liquid virus to infect and take over new hosts. A totally amazing concept. Again, one we had never seen before. Very well done and VERY scary. 5. "Jaws" - Who wasn't scared out of the water by this one? Since, most of the time, we don't actually see the shark, I have to give Speilberg his props for never letting us forget it's there. The music, the suspense, the fear, all constantly building throughout the film. 6. "An American Werewolf in London" - This was the first time that a character changed from a man to a werewolf where it actually looked real and scared the bejezus outta me. That one 'changing' scene in the apartment makes up for other times where the werewolf looks less than real. 7. "Dracula" (original)- Classic horror. For me, Bella IS Dracula. There is no substitute. This movie will always be in my 'monster' top ten, no matter what Hollywood may produce. It scared me, and it made me believe (and check closets before going to bed for the rest of my life). 8. "The Mummy" (original)- Another classic horror. And the first time something so slow moving would scare us to the core. Later films would use this slow moving killer idea with some success (like Michael Myers in 'Halloween'). 9. "Bram Stoker's Dracula" - A truly gorgeous film. The concept and back story of Dracula was well done, and the special effects better than average. Some of the acting and accents held this one back. ANYTHING that interferes with the suspension of disbelief should count heavily against a movie. 10. "Bride of Frankenstein" (original)- Another classic. And the best of the Frankenstein series. It was our first real monster on monster love story, scary and quirky at the same time. It too will always be a favorite. Notice how all but one were made prior to 1990? Isn't that a sad statement about the path Hollywood has chosen for itself? Most didn't have the benefit of CGI or the bloated budgets we see today, but they blow the new stuff right out of the water. "Bram Stoker's Dracula", despite it's beautiful images, falls further down on the list because of some poor acting (especially the dreadful English accents by Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder). Overall, Keanu Reeves is the weakest link in the movie. It could have been so much better! Hollywood, I am begging you! Please grab a few older movies and look at how good and effective they are. Study what made them that way, and then head out and make us some new ones. We have experienced excellence and won't settle for anything less! |
