Ice Hockey Goaltending 101: You think you want to be a goalie, eh?
by puckmugger | May 14 '04
The cost of gear can make the decision tough. See if you can borrow a set of gear, call local rinks to see if they have a loaner set.

Matt,
That's a pretty broad request which I addressed by writing several goalie articles including this one and the others linked at the bottom of it. If you have specific questions I'd be glad to help. Just drop me an email. (I often don't get alerts on these comments).

Re: Wrong Pronounciation... (Reply to this comment)

I don't know anything about French. I have heard it pronounced Roo-ah in old video replays, but once he came to Colorado, we all butchered it to Wah.
Thanks for the correction,

Wrong Pronounciation... (Reply to this comment)
by raf-epinion
It was surprising that you refered to Patricks Roy's last name as pronounced "wah".... Either, you really don't know much about him or don't know much about French,.... It is pronounced "Roo-aw"...

Wow, that there is a lot of broken bones!

Did you actually get to work with Tony personally? I've always wanted to spend a week up at Craig Billington's goalie camp in Toronto myself. I just haven't figured out how to tell my wife that we're going to Canada and I'll be too tired to do anything with her while we're on vacation.

Anyway, it sounds like you were quite the goalie. Thanks for the comments.

Great review....... (Reply to this comment)

Even though I gave up on hockey totally in 1980 it was a great sport to be apart of. I was a goalie from age 9 to 24 and played for the Ridgeland Comets in Oak Park Ill. I tried out for the Olympic Hockey team and failed and then I tried out for the Chicago Blackhawks and failed. I didn't want to be a goalie for the rest of my life on a double a team so I just gave up the sport all together.

I learned my techniques from Tony Esposito who was my idol then. After two broken noses and three broken arms I just called it quits. It's very hard work and to learn everything will take many years of games and practices. I remember in 1974 I had a string of four shutouts going against the best team from the year before. I lost the game 1-0 after being side swipe by 2 of their players actually pulling me out of the net. My team was behind me in cheering me up, but I could hear the guss words under their breaths too.

When you're the Hero everyone likes you, when it's not your night everyone treats you like a orphan. You can be ranked 6th in the country in Double A hockey it just won't mean a thing 25 years later though.

I have enjoyed reading your reviews and articles recently, and this one was definitely a good read for me.

I noticed you were open to email queries as mentioned in your description, but I can't find a way to do so (maybe it's buried in eOpinion's interface?). As someone who just started skating a year ago and is scheduled to start playing under the pipes in a month, it'd be nice to draw from your vast array of hockey know-how. How would you suggest I go about contacting you with a couple questions?

Thanks, and GO FLYERS (Blackhawks fan first and foremost, but...

...well, yeah.)

Well Dargen, It isn't like either of our home teams did that well this play off season. Of course I'm originally from the Philly area (no one is actually born in Colorado it seems). At least my Flyers are making a series of it. Thanks for reading.

Your love of hockey makes me want to add you to my WOT. However, your location makes me want to vomit. I'll have to think about this one.

GO WINGS!

And some say goalies aren't hockey players! How wrong they are.

Another enjoyable and informative review.

Kenn,
Hopefully I will get a job and not have so much time to waste eventually. That will likely slow me down a bit (grin). Thanks for reading and thanks for the comment.

Congratulations on 100 reviews puckmugger. At the rate you're going, it probably won't be too long until 1000. Hopefully I'll crack 100 before that day though...
