NEW Holiday Inn Hotel in Plymouth IN (Stay Here for Notre Dame Football Weekends)

Written: Sep 01 '01
Pros:Brand New Hotel in Plymouth, IN.
Cons:In the flight path for a small airport.
The Bottom Line: A nice new hotel, across the street from the airport. Suites available. Some rooms have spas, too.

Well, after much construction and a special request to the FAA, the Plymouth, Indiana Holiday Inn Express is now open, and it appears to have been worth the wait.

Location: 2550 North Michigan St, Plymouth, IN 46563
(note: Michigan Street is aka business 31)
(219) 936-4013
(219) 936-4553 (fax)
(800) 465-4329 (toll-free) 800-HOLIDAY

When to stay Here:
Anytime you are in the Plymouth area. Also a great place to stay on the way to Notre Dame football games, because all the hotels in South Bend are over-booked & over-priced.

Check-in: 3 pm
Check-out: Noon
Wheelchair access: Yes

Pool:
Yes, indoors! 3 ft at the shallow end, 8 ft at the deep end. Nice & warm in there, so you can use the pool in the winter too. No lifeguard, of course.

Rooms:
New, nicely appointed, about average in size. I stayed in a non-smoking regular king room (I'll update if I stay in the suite or in a room with a spa -- both of which are available here!) Smoking & non-smoking available. The bed I had was firm but comfortable, just what you'd expect from a Holiday Inn. The bathroom was spotless. Water pressure & hot water were both quite good (although I took my shower at around 10 am which is non-peak time)

Service:
Friendly staff at the front desk. They will go out of their way to give you directions, restaurant recommendations, extra towels, etc. My bill was correct & was ready for me when I checked out. In fact, I really didn't need to "check-out" (they have express checkout), but I'm one of those people who can't just leave.... I have to KNOW that the bill is settled.

Comparison to other hotels in Plymouth:
If you want an above average room for an average price, then this is definitely the place to go in Plymouth! While a few other hotels have changed hands and have had some renovations, they certainly can't compare to this new hotel. For something more upscale try the Irish Inn B&B.

Current room rates per night: (9/1/01) [subject to change]
King leisure /Great rates/any day of the week/$75.05
King leisure/corporate rate/any day/$77.00
1 King suite/corporate rate/any day/$87.00
Two queen beds/ Rack rate/any day/$89.00
Suite wheel chair access/Rack rate/any day/$89.00
King spa/corporate rate/any day/$97.00
King spa/Rack rate/any day/$99.00
2 Qn bed suite /corporate rate/any day/$107.00

The cons:
Remember at the beginning of the review when I said they needed special permission from the FAA to build the hotel? They needed it because the hotel is in the flight path of a small airport (Plymouth municipal). The noise is really not a negative because only a handful of planes use the airport daily, and only a handful a month use the airport at night. We're talking about private pilots / prop planes -- not big noisy jets! But, they built the hotel about a foot higher than the FAA approved -- then had to petition the FAA for special approval !! So, I suppose you have to trust the private pilots in the area, or stay on the first floor :-0

The only other thing -- Holiday Inn Express is kinda no frills -- meaning low in amenities. No room service here. No restaurant, no pets allowed, no fitness center, no concierge.

The bottom line is: need a clean, comfortable, affordable place to sleep -- here it is. Need lots of amenities -- move on up the road.
