I've been looking for some good thrillers to download from itunes, and I found your list really useful. I haven't kept up with what's going on at the movies for the last couple of decades, but there's a lot on your list that definitely whet the old appetite for shock and suspense. The few I have seen that are on your list, are top favourites of mine, so I have great faith in your opinion.

Rmurray,

Wow!!! Usually I read lists like these and I disagree with many of the selections. But I like all your Top 10 picks, and give you extra props for picking FRAILTY, a sadly overlooked little masterpiece.

Cool! And I loved "Frailty" - I've been a big fan of Bill Paxton ever since. I wish I understood why some films go unnoticed...

Only PRIMAL FEAR left me a little disappointed. Don't get me wrong, it's well done...but I kinda saw the "twist" coming...which is always a little disappointing.

Now I had read the book, so I knew the ending going in. Normally I just don't do that - especially with a thriller. But I'm glad I did because Ed Norton was fabulous enough in that scene to make me forget I ever saw it on paper. So for me, any weakness in the plotted ending was overridden by that incredible performance.

Now I want to watch both of them again!!

I was off playing Army when you wrote this essay. I sure enjoyed this list of films. I have almost all of these in my collection, an excellent list!

Thanks, Mac. I love a good thriller, and they seem to come along so infrequently. I'm still waiting for the next addition to this list!

Marie,

You know, I just saw some new editions of the books at the book store. One with Viggo, one with Orlando. The kids should have at least those two - even if they were different editions of the same book...........

We should probably have a poster too - it's important to provide our children with pictures of cultural events and all, you know ;)

Your son should read them. Unhuh...the things you do for your child. ;)
Though having to go into a dark, icky, basement may be little above and beyond. There could be spiders down there. It would be much safer to head to the bookstore - less likely to run into spiders there..;)
I have a Return of the King poster. It is a nice, big, close up of Viggo. :) Need to find a frame for it and hang it up. The colors don't exactly go with my decor, but it is Viggo. :)

Marie,

I think we have old versions of the books lurking in the basement. Damn, no pictures of Viggo for me. Then again, I might be too scared to go into the musty, smelly basement and have to buy a shiny, fresh copy......yeah, that's right. That's just what I need to do! Because my son should read it, of course, not for me. ;)

It would be easier to make him from scratch using Play-Doh. Come to think of it, that might be the way he should go at this point.

Here, I had a go at it:

It's a little greener than Jacko, but I think I captured his spirit, and his enormous scrotum, quite well.

As opposed to "relaxing roughly"?

Alright, so I can be redundant. But I can also say things twice in two different ways. So take that!

Gareth, would you mind very much keeping the pig imitations to a minimum in the workplace?

Oggy-oggy-oggy! Oink! Oink! Oink!

I didn't read the LOTR books until a few months ago. I started them after I saw Return of the King. I had them for well over a year, but I just didn't get to them before that. I guess I decided I wanted to see the movies first. I did like them, though you are right about no Viggo. Though my copy of Return of the King has a nice picture of him on the cover. :)

I still have more thinking to do for a list, but I have ideas now. There are certain movies I know are going on it..I just have to figure out which others to include. And I'm sure if I do a favorite of all time list sometime, all the LOTR are going on it. Hmm..Perhaps I could lump them all together since technically it is one long story. :)

The Usual Mikespects,

Good thing this will never happen, outside the world of PhotoShop that is.

Oh, come on. You love your bear suit, fess up.

Now that I think of it, couldn't you do wonders, with that program, putting the King of Pop's face back together? At least digitally.

Nobody possesses that kind of photoshopping skill. It would be easier to make him from scratch using Play-Doh. Come to think of it, that might be the way he should go at this point.

Don't you know that it is summer vacation?

Not here, it isn't. Not for another two weeks. But those who get done early don't get the joys of constructing a scale model covered wagon out of a shoebox. So there.

I am well past the point of "working hard". I plan to just "relax easily".

As opposed to "relaxing roughly"?

Marie,

Well I can live with not seeing Life if Beautiful. I don't think I've missed much.

I sure don't think so.

You go ahead and say you are renting ROTK for your son...;)

Oh, but we are! Maybe we'll even let him watch it.......

I love the movies and I have read the books now..and I have the soundtracks too.

I have not read the books, which is why I was so disinterested when the movies first came out. I'd like to read them now - but can't quite imagine where I'd find the time. Besides, there's no Viggo or Orlando in the books....;)

I'm thinking I'll go with animated movies first..but I'll see what I come up with.

That sound reasonable, since you have a lot of those in your collection. You could do an all LOTR, all the time list!! :)

I don't expect you to read the reviews, just work hard, get your advisor hat back and rubberstamp an MH on all of them. Is that really asking so much?

It's not too much to ask, no. All except the "working hard" part. Don't you know that it is summer vacation? I am well past the point of "working hard". I plan to just "relax easily".

MonsterMike,

That's right. I one played the lead zombie in Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' video. But my new role is as a formerly-hatted movie reviewer. Boo!

Oh, my. I think it would be far better to be the latter than the former. MJ would most certainly take a shine to an mfunk zombie in a bear suit. Ewwwwww.

I bet I would have gotten all that if I had actually read review. But I seem to have forgotten how to do that. Suspiciously, I haven't forgotten how to rubberstamp.

Oh, I don't expect you to read the reviews, just work hard, get your advisor hat back and rubberstamp an MH on all of them. Is that really asking so much? I didn't think so.

I will pay you $50 to make this your new profile page slogan.

You know where to send the money.

Here's the thing: I used to have a huge man-crush on Kevin Spacey, even bigger than the one I currently have on Sir Bill. But back then he would only wear his shit-eating grin (SEG) for special occasions. Now he sports it all the time. I hate that. Plus, I haven't actually wanted to see any of his movies since American Beauty.

In other words, you turned your man-crush back on the fabulous Mr. Spacey because he was just too damn sexy. Maybe I'll wave to you from my perch on the back of his scooter.

I'm so special, they call me 'Special K'. Er, 'Special M'. They just call me special, ok?

They call you "Special Ed" and you know it.

Shut up.

Yeah, right.

Oh the humanity!

Clowns are not human, mister.

Maybe I'm just out of practice, but that sounds like a "Seinfeld" reference. Do you know where I can find a good game of "Seinfeld" trivia around here? One laden with special effects, poor storytelling, and wooden acting from its lead Canuck actor? Hmm?

I think there's an old, dusty one around somewhere. You'll have to look for it and see if you can revive the poor thing.

Marie,

Nothing about Life is Beautiful appealed to me when it came out, and I haven't changed my mind about it since then. I do remember that I was surprised that he won.

I felt pretty much the same way, but decided to see it after he won the Oscar - mistake, mistake, mistake.

I love LOTR...... Did you get to see Return of the King in the theater?

I had absolutely no interest in the LOTR movies - sent my husband to see the first two without me. I hadn't read the books and just didn't care. Until we rented Fellowship. I was instantly hooked, and now we own the extended versions of the first two (as well as the soundtracks to all three) and I saw ROTK in the theater. We'll wait for the extended of ROTK before we buy, but we'll rent it before that - because our son wants to see it. Yeah, that's it, we do it all for our son.......;)

So maybe I will get one done here before long..and maybe I'll even tackle a few of them.

They are sort of fun once you get going - though I find it daunting to start one. I'll be looking for your first one!

I don't think they had splint up yet then either. He - I can't remember how to spell his name at the moment...my brain must be napping - was in a movie with Helena...I think it was a version of Hamlet that he directed. I think they hooked up while making that movie, and I think it was made after Howard's End. Though I can't remember for sure now.

Nothing about Life is Beautiful appealed to me when it came out, and I haven't changed my mind about it since then. I do remember that I was surprised that he won.

I love LOTR. I think I've become a tad..obsessive about it. I have both versions of the first two movies, and will get the extended of this one too. I know..I'm a bit nuts. Oh well. :) I was only going to get the theatrical version of Fellowship, but then I saw the preview for the extended version and decided to get it. With Two Towers, I was going to wait on the extended version. Then it came out and was actually on sale here and I couldn't resist. This time I just went ahead and got it and will the extended too. I love those movies. Did you get to see Return of the King in the theater?

Oh, I have done a little thinking on one of these lists. I haven't done too much for one yet, but did start thinking and making a list. So maybe I will get one done here before long..and maybe I'll even tackle a few of them. :)

Long Lost Mike,

Lo and behold, the dead have risen!

You were rolling along fine, picking 8 solid thrillers in a row (including some of my personal favourite movies from any genre).

Of course, did you expect otherwise? Don't answer that.

But then you went and picked a Steve Zahn movie. Now, Steve Zahn is a nice boy, and a fine actor. But he's more of a stoner than a thriller. Still, I'm willing to give you the benefit of the doubt, seeing as I haven't actually seen Joy Ride.

Well, if you haven't seen it, then qitcherbitchin. Keep in mind that it is a silly thriller - with Zahn having many a stoner attribute. That doesn't change the fact that it's a damn good thriller.

But I have seen The Usual Suspects. I don't despise that film because of the presence of Kevin Spacey -- who may or may not have stolen Bill Murray's cell phone while walking Keyser Soze's dog at 4:30 in the morning

When puppy has to pee, puppy has to pee. And what's a man to do without a good cell phone? Murray was probably more than happy to lend his phone to the ever fabulous Sir Kevin.

I despise it because I figured out the ending within the first five minutes. And the film didn't have the smarts to prove me wrong.

Well, aren't you special? I didn't figure it out, so I love it. You're never going to get a scooter ride from Kevin if you keep this up, mister.

BTW: where's my cyber parade? I want my clowns and my stilt-walkers now!

Oh, I'm sorry, the clowns were beaten to a pulp by a clown hating mob who feared all those red balloons. The stilt walkers tripped over the supine clowns and all the balloon animals escaped to roam the city and terrorize the latex-phobic. But it was nice while it lasted - too bad you missed it. I even saw a giant mfunk floating balloon, but Mr. Pitt lost control of it and it squished the entirety of the parade onlookers. Tragic.

Agree with Primal Fear and Joy Ride sounds intriguing, but I'm more into classics like The Manchurian Candidate and Hitchcock ones like the one you recommend.

I know I should watch more classics, but I just never get around to it. Some day.......

Marie,

I haven't seen Howard's End..I had no idea she was in it with Emma Thompson.

At the time, I don't think Thompson and Branagh had split yet - I'm not sure. I'm guessing that those two women won't be in a lot of projects together in the future :)

Ahh..ok. I never did see Life is Beautiful. I have no desire to see that one.

Personally, I would say don't bother. I didn't like him or the film.

....just got Return of the King yesterday.

Agree with Primal Fear and Joy Ride sounds intriguing, but I'm more into classics like The Manchurian Candidate and Hitchcock ones like the one you recommend. Nice list, though!
