How to Care for and Maintain Non-Stick Cookware

Perhaps the single most important thing to remember when using non-stick cookware is to always be careful of what you put in it.

You are right, they do make a very satisfying *BONK* on someone's head, but I've learned to enjoy the *THUD* of a cast iron skillet instead. Thanks for R/R/C!

I used to have a problem with my kids using my pans and ruining the non-stick surfaces. It took me a while, but I think they are all well-trained now.

Thanks for R/R/C!

Don't Use Them As weapons (Reply to this comment)

Though no one would deny they make a very satisfying *BONK* when used to crown an offensive person on the head, repeated bonking does substantially shorten the shelf-life of pots and pans.

Oh boy... I had an awful roommate who did her best to ruin the few non-stick pans that I left in the kitchen. I started keeping my pans in my room because I couldn't stand her ruining them!

My frying pans would be bent and warped, and she would either scrub them with a harsh scrubber, or she'd would throw them in the dishwasher - keep in mind, these are the biggest frying pans around!

Fortunately, it's just me and my fiance using our own cookware. We have a nice little collection of Oxo nylon cooking tools that keep our pots and pans in good shape.

Nice review!

I know of people who keep complaining about having to replace their cookware so often. The first question I ask them is whether or not they wash them in the dishwasher.

The surface on my Mom's is still in great shape after about 5 or 6 years of use, but she hand washes all of her pans. My friend replaces her set regularly, and continues to put them in the dishwasher. I wonder if she will ever learn!?!

Thanks for R/R/C!

I second your advice not to put non-stick cookware in the dishwasher. It greatly reduces the life of your cookware. Non stick cookie sheets seem to be especially easy to ruin with the harsh dishwashing detergent.
