Hmm... (Reply to this comment)

I have this cartoon in my funny folder here that's titled..."Why Gays shouldn't be in the military"...it's a picture of two guys in a foxhole, one has a pair of binoculars and he says..."I can't shoot him, he's GORGEOUS!"
...um...but dang it, that could easily be two straight women now couldn't it? HA!
Now, on a serious note...I'm a straight Lady (embarrassing to admit, but true), but one of the biggest thing that burns me up is when an idiot woman says something like..."If he'd just get laid by a good woman, that whole gay thing would just go away!"...Merde'
When the hell will these IDIOT women learn that if your gay, your born that way and there's no converting you...PERIOD! Why don't these jerks think about it for just one frikkin minute and turn it around in their tiny little brains...
um, I'm totally straight, women do not turn me on, never will and there's no converting me...PERIOD!
Ah well, once a moron always a moron I guess...
Very well done editorial darlin'!

I see the point that you make that even if orientation were a choice that there shouldn't be a right and wrong one. I shouldn't feel the need to defend who I am by saying I was "born this way" as if homosexuality was a genetic, chronic condition which implies there's something wrong with me. And I don't feel that way.
As for nature vs. nurture, all I can say is that society, my family, my parents, my friends, and everything else in my environment during my formulative years told me to "fly straight" so to speak and I was never comfortable with that. When I finally did learn what gay was, the term fit the way I always felt was different, I didn't really choose anything.
Thanks for reading.

This was a good read, but I have an issue with one thing.
Conventional wisdom (and your essay) infers that because I believe homosexuality might be a choice, I'm "ignorant" and "homophobic." I have a problem with this, only because I know that's not so. My reason for doubting it's biological is a scientific one...I believe biology has little or nothing to do with the development of our personalities. It's mostly environment and our personal experiences, I think.
I don't have a problem with homosexuality for ONE VERY SIMPLE REASON. And that is...(drum roll please)
SEX/LOVE BETWEEN TWO CONSENTING ADULTS, SAME SEX OR NOT, DOESN'T &*$#@% HURT ANYONE.
Everything that's morally wrong involves someone getting hurt by another person's actions. Murder is morally wrong. Stealing is morally wrong. Rape is morally wrong. Gay sex/love doesn't hurt anyone. Therefore, it's not morally wrong. Simple.
To me, the debate on whether homosexuality is a choice or not is a silly one, because I don't understand why that makes such a difference to people. Even if it is a choice, so fuccking what?
Seriously, "Anti-Gays"...chew on that one for a minute.

I'm kinda jealous of the fact that you live in Massachusetts and I've visited Boston and liked it - but I'm not quite willing and ready to live in "Taxachusetts" just yet.
Thanks.

There is a reason why homophobes gay bash. According to the APA, they're aroused by bashing. http://www.apa.org/releases/homophob.html
"Homophobia is a treatable mental illness. Homosexuality is not a mental illness."
This is taped on my screen to remind me daily of who the bashers are--mentally ill.
Excellent editorial. Being out is much easier than being in!

You forgot one of the great Bill Maher quotes:
"Of course we should allow gay marriage. That way they can be just as unhappy as we are!"
I Probably mangled that quote, but very nice editorial my friend.

Good, well written piece (Reply to this comment)
by Bryan_Carey
I especially like the part about homosexuality not being a choice. It will take time before more people understand and accept this obvious fact. Opponents of homosexuality have to propagate the false notion that homosexuality is a choice because it allows them to blame gays for all of the homosexual's problems in society. If they admitted that it wasn't a choice, they would have to accept it as reality and they could no longer point the finger of blame. Members of the religious right are the most prone to this flawed way of thinking.
Good luck in all you do.

Great Essay (Reply to this comment)
by jps246
In my experience, the single most important thing that any homosexual can do is to just be out
So very true - everywhere I've ever been, that's been the biggest thing - from college life to my professional career. Once most people realize that gay people are just like everyone else, a lot of walls are easier to get over or knock down.
I've got to say though - I'm amazed, at least here in eastern Massachusetts/Boston - I've heard my share of f*g bashing, but generally most people I've had a chance to talk to or come across have either been supportive of the whole gay marriage debate, or at the least, unconcerned about it. Now compare that to Vermont several years ago when they were trying to get Civil Unions approved - I literally feared for my safety then it was so rough.
