This is a collapsible shovel made by Coleman. It is designed to be folded for easy storage in a vehicle or even a backpack.
How it works?
This is a collapsible shovel that folds down at 2 joints. It is one connected piece the does not disconnect but it is made out of 3 pieces, a shovelhead, shovel arm, and handle. Some come with their own pouch that can fit onto a military belt or certain backpacks.
From the collapsed form, just fold out the handle and the head. It does not lock into place while collapsed so there is nothing to worry about. Connected between each piece is a screw ring that locks the shovel. Just twist them into place and it locks the shovel quite well.
You can also use it like a pick. Instead of folding the shovelhead all the way out just fold out the head to a 90-degree angles and tighten the ring so that it is locked into the 90-degree angle. Now this is not to be confused with the collapsible shovel that also has a pick opposing the shovelhead. So if you need a pick I suggest you get that version instead.
There is also a serrated edge for cutting. This feature would only be used in emergencies or as a joke. It just is not well designed for this purpose at all.
By my estimations, this shovel is only 1/3 as effective as a full size shovel, which means more effort is needed by the user. The other problem is the arm is very short and you will be kneeling or hunched over while using it in most situations.
Can it be used as a hammer?
For emergency purposes you can, but the soil better be relatively soft. But I would never plan on using this as a hammer, I think a fire log would work better.
Who is this for?
My grandparents had some of these stored in their R.V. and we used them frequently when we went to the beach. They were great for digging in the sand or using to mess with the fire. I always have this out when enjoying a fire and it did come in handy once when I had an issue with a stove.
Durability
Durability for these tools is great. Now you cant expect them to look brand new, they are a tool. But I suspect I will misplace this before I find a way to break it.
Who is this for?
While I have packed this into my backpack before (and a chair, and
) it is just too heavy to be considered a backpacking tool. So I recommend it for the car camper for two reasons. The first is for cleaning out a fire pit with too much ash in it as well as putting out a fire where you do not have access to water. The second reason is to build a trench around your tent to divert rain water, if you are expecting heavy rains. If you need to dig a deep hole then just get a real shovel.
