The line stretched across the shopping center and I, of course, was last. Having waited two years for the conclusion of the adventures of The Boy Who Lived, I figured I could live with waiting an extra few minutes in comfort. So I arrived as they started moving people through the bookstore, fell into my last place position, and dodged and weaved through the store like a drunken sailor, through the aisles and restraining gates until finally being handed my book.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
Garishly colored, the cover was a flame of bright red, orange, and yellow. A weighty tome, coming in at 759 pages, it looks like Rowlings wanted to cover every contingency. And she did.
So I returned home and began to read, not sure about what to expect, only knowing that by the end of the day all my questions would be answered. Nicely enough, all of Harry's questions would be answered as well.
And now they are.
We have watched Harry Potter maturing through the years, as he moved from one great adventure to the next. In The Deathly Hallows that journey comes full circle. He, with all of us along as passive observers, finally start connecting all the dots until the picture of Harry's life is whole.
We meet many old friends during this adventure, and are introduced to several new characters as we finally meet those people who have until now remained on the sidelines. And it is from these new characters that understanding grows, as they add to the story of Harry's life.
Rowlings does a great job in bringing Harry to manhood by the end of the book. The decisions forced upon him require adult responses, and we see the man Harry has become, fully mature and caring about the lives around him. Lily and James would be quite rightly proud of their son as, in our own way, I'm sure we readers are as well.
So yes, we have reached the end, and it is a very satisfactory end indeed. And no, I will not tell you what that ending is. You will simply have to read the book for yourselves. Go ahead and do so, you will not regret it.
