Should Paul McCartney Go Back on Drugs?

Jun 13 '04 (Updated Jan 10 '07)

The Bottom Line Should Sir Paul do drugs?

With Paul McCartney's 62nd birthday coming up on June 18th, I decided to voice my opinion about this British and American icon.
Paul McCartney and The Beatles have been a chief part of my life since I was incredibly small. I was born in 1970, just in time for the solo Beatles, and my mom had listened to Beatles and solo Beatles ever since I could remember.
They have sparked a passion for music in my life. As I got older, I learned more and more about the group and the individuals. The more I learned, the more I liked this musical phenomenon.

I became a Beatle fanatic in my early teens and purchased books, magazines and videos of the band and loved digesting everything. You are what you eat, so I am somewhat of a walking Beatle encyclopedia.

Over these last few recent years in Paul McCartney's life, I did notice a change. I sort of anticipated a change in Paul with the awful passing of his first wife Linda back in the spring of 1998. I have a high regard for Linda's bravery to face harsh and unwarranted criticism of her presence on Paul's records and concert stages. She added a very distinctive sound with her background vocals that set apart Wings and McCartney music alike and in a good way. Her death was a sad day and she will be greatly missed.

Paul remarried to another interesting woman with an even more interesting background. Heather Mills had a brief career as a model that began back in the late 1980s. This career was overshadowed by her campaign for the cause against minefields when her leg had to be amputated below the knee, after a horrible accident involving a London Police motorcycle 11 years ago.
Heather Mills is a woman to be admired as well, because of determination, perseverance and mostly because her campaign against minefields is a serious situation. It is a real cause unlike silly liberal campaigns like Free Saddam or Kill Jesus. Mrs. Mills-McCartney had brought me to tears one night as I was watching Larry King, and you can see her distributing prosthetics to children and adults who could never afford such a morbid luxury. She made these people feel special, and they were so thankful for the donation. Heather Mills-McCartney had earned my respect and support since that broadcast.

Well, let me get to the point of the story here folks. I've read in the news somewhat recently that Heather Mills has stopped Sir Paul from smoking pot anymore. I was sort of surprised that Paul still actually used pot at this stage in his life. I mean the sixties are over, and the new awareness available today is overwhelming. She said that his new music is going to be better than ever because he's finally writing and recording straight.

Well, so far I haven't heard of any new music from Paul, but in the news he has things to say almost every week. It seems the straight Paul has a lot to get off his chest now that marijuana is not suppressing his opinionated position anymore.

First, he wishes to change the order of the writing credits from "Lennon/McCartney" to "McCartney/Lennon" on the songs he has written the majority or all of. For me, this is an ok idea, but the reality of it is this. The people who listen to Beatle music are most of the time like me, a Beatle fanatic. We know the story behind every song, I know the songs that Paul has written or that John Lennon has written. The Beatles have been with us such a short period of time, from 1963-1969. There is a lot of music to go through, but it is at the same time very finite.
The people that do not know these things about who wrote what, won't and don't care anyway.

Paul has always seemed very non-partisan to me. First of all he resides in the UK. With the exception of the liberal vehicle PETA, he has not really associated himself with any partisan cause. What we know about Paul is that he is a vegetarian spokesman. This is just a way of eating, it hurts no one, and it has no effect on anybody who disagrees with vegetarianism. But in the recent news, for Paul to speak out against Tony Blair and George Bush about the war in Iraq and their foreign policies is very upsetting. The fact is that we are at war, and the morale of our soldiers is at stake when even these few speak out how it's an unjust war. Didn't we find the WMDs? The answer is yes; a long-range missile with a deadly gas that could kill over 10,000 people at once does qualify as a weapon of mass destruction. Why would McCartney associate himself with the likes of Tim Robbins and Sean Penn who cannot seem to get through a sentence without screeching "Impeach Bush"? Now granted, McCartney is not in the same league of these screechers, but since during this election year, unfortunately the parties really take sides, and so he has associated himself with them by speaking out against Bush and Blair. No one cares about Sean Penn or Tim Robbins, but I'm sure many of these brave soldiers are fans of McCartney. I believe low morale brought on by these celebrity words of hate is dangerous and ends up ultimately with dead soldiers.

In very recent news, McCartney announced that the Beatles did drugs. Well, duh, I think we knew that, but he does go on. McCartney admits to cocaine and heroin use as well. This is disturbing, but then again not so far fetched. The statement that steams my bean is that Paul has contradicted the ghost of John Lennon by stating that it "is pretty obvious" that Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds is about the drug LSD. Now my point here, is that Lennon has always vehemently denied this association and attributed the inspiration from a drawing that his son Julian had created, and true or not Paul should have backed up his friend's story forever. As a Beatle fan, I know that Lennon had slightly embellished stories or misremembered some tales, but to be an out and out liar? Yoko must be shaking her head in her hand as she reads this about Paul.

Paul seems to have a lot to say now that he is off drugs finally, I think he has a little too much to say if you ask me. Now, I'm not saying that people should use drugs; most of you that do are usually huge a-holes. Paul just seems to be one without them.
