My toughest moment so far as a parent
by mommykd | Jun 10 '04
My child was sick, I didn't know what was wrong, and I had to deal with an incompetent doctor.

When my oldest had Rotavirus, we were sent up to the hospital for IV rehydration. Do you know what the ER doctor had us do instead? Pin her down in the ER room and FORCE FLUIDS WITH A SYRINGE.

At the time, I was too new a parent and still too reverent of doctors to question it, but after looking back, I've NEVER put up with that again. I've called doctors on the carpet, asked attending physicians in the hospital if they bothered reading my son's chart before billing my insurance, and called my pediatrician to inform her that there was one nurse practitioner in her practice that I was NEVER to see again after a well-baby visit where she told me that Early Intervention services for children were a waste of time and then forcibly retracted my uncircumcized son's foreskin (he was 6 months old at the time).

You learned much more quickly than I did, and kudos to you for being such a great advocate for your daughter. That Rotavirus is nothing to fool around with. We've had stomach viruses since, and NOTHING can compare.

and you wouldn't believe what goes on in hospitals, nursing homes, etc.

Glad she fully recovered. You were right to give them hell.

Susie.

......so scary! You were a great advocate for your daughter..the things good mommies are made of. Geez, there is quite a bit of difference between 11 weeks and 11 months....if he didn't notice that right off the bat, I sure wouldn't want to be one of his patients.

Thanks for the great write up and Make it a great day..........kath

oh yeah - it was nasty! Some how, my husband and I managed to avoid it. I hope we never encounter it again.

Thanks for reading!

Don't know exactly WHAT it is and WHERE it comes from, but I got it at work when my oldest was a baby.

Had a fruit salad and clam chowder for lunch, and left it along the side of the road when I was driving home crazily, trying to get to my "throne" before throwing up. (Haven't eaten clam chowder since!)

My husband picked up the baby, but both of them came down with it in the middle of the night, and both landed in the ER getting IV fluids. This is some scary kind of event, so I know where you're coming from.
