1973 - Tresure Hunt W/O

The Bottom Line What about 1973?
Annie_Crane is hosting the Treasure Hunt Write Off. It is a very interesting write off that will help you to learn more about the year you were born. If you like to surf the web and look for interesting information this would be a great write off for you to join. I found it interesting and entertaining. The object of the write off is to try to find out about the year you were born and what was going on at the time and what was popular.
I was born in December 1973, the first child to a young couple. But what else was going on in their lives at that time?
1) One invention the year you were born. It can be anything from a food item to a car.
Apparently the Internet was invented in December 1973 (not only the year I was born but also the same month). By searching http://www.google.com I came across a web site (http://www.ideafinder.com/history/inventions/story070.htm) that helped me to discover this information. "The Internet and Transmission Control Protocols were initially developed in 1973 by American computer scientist Vinton Cerf as part of a project sponsored by the United States Department of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) and directed by American engineer Robert Kahn."
2) Who was the most famous actor/actress the year you were born.
According to my book, "You Must Remember This 1973", the Oscar winner for best actress was Glenda Jackson and the winner for best actor was Jack Lemmons. Also, it was the year that The Exorcist was released so I am sure that Linda Blair was popular. And Marlon Brando was popular in Last Tango In Paris.
3) Most popular vehicle the year you were born.
Consumer Reports rated the Volkswagen Super Beetle the best buy on the market at $2,425. I wish that I could find a new car for that price!!!! It seems that the recession and the Arab oil embargo made the small cars that had high mileage the most popular pick. But the Ford Thunder bird was also popular.
4) Which president was in office and what did he do for our country that was different, either good or bad.
Richard Nixon was president and of course we were in the year of Watergate.
5) One hit movie
only one? Oh, come on. I can give you five. The top-grossing films in 1973 were:
1. The Exorcist ($89,000,000)
2. The Sting ($78,212,000) - also the Oscar winner for best film.
3. American Graffiti ($55,212,000)
4. Papillon ($22,500,000)
5. The Way We Were ($22,457,000)
6) Something from the top ten category in music.
Why not the entire top 10?
1. Killing Me Softly with His Song (Roberta Flack)
2. Tie A Yellow Ribbon 'Round The Ole Oak Tree (Tony Orlando & Dawn)
3. My Love (Paul McCartney & Wings)
4. You're So Vain (Carly Simon)
5. Crocodile Rock (Elton John)
6. Let's Get It On (Marvin Gaye)
7. Keep On Truckin' (Eddie Kendrick)
8. Bad Bad Leroy Brow (Jim Croce)
9. Top Of The World (The Carpenters)
10. Midnight Train To Georgia (Gladys Knight & The Pips)
I personally think that 1973 was a great year for music. I love "Killing Me Softly With His Song", "Midnight Train To Georgia", "You're So Vain", and "Let's Get It On". In addition to these great top ten songs it was the year that both Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen first hit the charts.
7) Any item of your choice to mention from the year you were born.
I found a few interesting facts about 1973 that I wanted to share. Some seem almost haunting to me today. For instance, it was the year that the 110-story World Trade Center was completed. It was also the year that the DRAFT ended. Writing this today it is chilling to think of either. To think of the lose and of the possibility of a new DRAFT.
1973 was also the year of the landmark case of Roe vs. Wade in which it was ruled that the state could not prevent a woman from having abortions in the first 6 months of pregnancy. While you may or may not agree with this ruling you have to agree that it was a life altering moment in history. Another landmark decision was made in 1973 when U.S. psychiatrists ruled that homosexuality would no longer be considered a mental illness.
Women in the world of Sports really took off in 1973 when for the first time ever scholarships for women's sports were offered and Billy Jean King won the "Battle Of The Sexes".
On the lighter side, jumbo eyelashes and bright lipstick were popular along with polyester.
I hope that you enjoyed learning a little more about the year 1973. I am glad that I took this opportunity to learn a little more about the year I was born. Thanks goes out to Anne_Crane for hosting this write off.
I found the answers to the previous questions by using a search engine, http://www.google.com, and by looking up information in a book entitled "You Must Remember This 1973" that I had received as a gift several years ago
