Annie_Crane's Treasure Hunt Write-Off or How I Stopped Writing and Learned to Love Research!Jun 13 '04 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line is turning 40 on November 3rd. Send flowers. Annie_Crane is hosting the It's Time for a Treasure Hunt! write-off which is guaranteed to make you think and research (two things I usually dislike). Want to join in and learn something about the year you were born? Click the link (after you rate this "Very Helpful", add me to your Web of Trust, and vow to send me lots of money first, okay?) and join in! 1) One invention the year you were born. It can be anything from a food item to a car. One? Just one? I can't give "just one" because these are all connected! The computer mouse, BASIC programming language, the first computer game, and the prototype for Windows were all invented in 1964! Without 1964, what would we all be doing now? 2) Who was the most famous actor/actress the year you were born. Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison. Both won the Academy Award in their category in 1964. 3) Most popular vehicle the year you were born. In April of 1964, the Mustang was introduced. 4) Which president was in office and what did he do for our country that was different, either good or bad. That was good old Lyndon B. Johnson. He signed the Civil Rights Act into law, but also introduced us to Vietnam. 5) One hit movie Oh, please! One? No, that was the year My Fair Lady took home the Oscar over Mary Poppins and Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. All three are classics! 6) Something from the top ten category in music. How about the entire top ten category for Rock and Roll? And really, is there any other kind of music? I Want to Hold Your Hand-- Beatles Cant Buy Me Love-- Beatles There! Ive Said It Again-- Bobby Vinton Baby Love-- Supremes Oh, Pretty Woman-- Roy Orbison The House of the Rising Sun-- Animals Chapel of Love-- Dixie Cups I Feel Fine-- Beatles She Loves You-- Beatles I Get Around-- Beach Boys 7) Any item of your choice to mention from the year you were born. Once again, there is too much to chose from! After all, Elizabeth Taylor married Richard Burton for the first time in 1964. Bill Cosby married Camilla Oliva Hanks (and began the basis of The Cosby Show). Sonny married Cher. 1964 also saw Nelson Mandela was sentenced to life in prison. I'm in a fine group of people who turn 40 this year: Nicolas Cage, Mariska Hargitay, Bridget Fonda, Melissa Gilbert, Courtneney Cox, Courtney Love, Sandra Bullock, Vivica A. Fox, Blair Underwood, Faith Ford, and Janeane Garofalo. Call them old, I dare you! Not to mention 1964 also saw the first US General Surgeon's warning about smoking (pardon me while I light up another one in complete disregard to 40 years of warnings); Beatles first appearance on Ed Sullivan's show (And some 58 year old women are still screaming); topless bathing suit (yeah, it had it's knockers, but made news); and GI Joe ACTION FIGURE (notice, it's not a doll even though GI Joe was found with many a Barbie Doll and in as compromising of a position as plastic can go). 1964 was a great year. Even though the nation was still reeling from the assassination of John F. Kennedy, we kept on. Human rights and computer made marvelous advances. The British invasion of music began. And I really wish I had a 1964 Mustang to sell right now. Thank you, Annie, for hosting this chance to discover that 1964 was really a great year! Of course it was, I was born! |
