In May 2007 I wanted to get a pre-approval for a new home. Countrywide told me that I would have to bring my credit score up by 20 points and in order to do this I would have to re-finance my existing loan and pay down some bills. Well, they did advertise no closing cost - that was a lie. Wanting to buy my dreamhouse I refinanced and brought my credit up to their needs. July 9, I received my preapproval letter and I put a contract on a property. My contract was put in on a Friday and next Tuesday I was told that Countrywide changed their rules and that my credit score will no longer be accepted. I disputed that with no positive response and was turned down a week later. What a disappointment. I would not have put a contract on a house without the pre-approval. With the refinance I had a great interviewer that came through as promised, but she left and the new interviewer did not return phone calls, emails and I had to get lucky to get him on the phone. Overall I would not recommend Countrywide. False advertising and promises, mostly bad customer service.
